Email marketing can be extremely effective when done right.
In fact, according to DMA’s research, marketers estimated that the ROI for every £1 spent on email marketing was £35.41. That’s a 3541% return on investment!
And this is just the average ROI – you could almost certainly do better than that if you put your mind to it!

Why You Should Design Your Sales Funnel First
Email marketing doesn’t exist in isolation – it should always be viewed in the context of your overall sales funnel.
That’s why we recommend designing your sales funnel first. Once you understand the big picture, creating an effective email marketing strategy should be relatively straightforward.
There are several popular sales funnel models out there. Which one should you use for your travel agency?
We believe that the most effective way to sell anything online is the Value Ladder sales funnel.
It was created by our co-founder Russell Brunson who then used it to take ClickFunnels from zero to $10M+ in annual revenue in just one year (it’s at $100M+ now!).
This sales funnel has four stages:
- Bait – You offer the potential customer your lead magnet in exchange for their email address.
- Frontend – You offer the potential customer your least expensive and least valuable product or service.
- Middle – You offer the customer a more expensive and more valuable product or service.
- Backend – You offer the customer your most expensive and most valuable product or service.
Ideally, you also offer a continuity program of some sort, meaning, a subscription product that generates recurring revenue.
We also recommend adding downsells, upsells, and cross sells to these core offers in order to maximize your revenue.

The reason why this sales funnel works so well is that it allows you to:
- Start the relationship with that person by offering free value
- Nurture that relationship by continuing to provide free value via email
- Build trust by providing progressively more paid value at each stage
Here’s how Russell explains it:
Also, if the Value Ladder graph above seems overwhelming, keep in mind that you can create a basic Value Ladder sales funnel with just a lead magnet and a frontend offer, then build out the rest of it over time!

Grow Your Email List With a Lead Generation Funnel
So how can you build an email list?
The best way to do that is to create a lead generation funnel and then drive traffic to it with paid ads!
What is a Lead?

A lead is a potential customer that has:
- Expressed an interest in your niche
- Given you their contact details
Note that the potential customer has to meet both of these criteria to be considered a lead.
Someone who visited your website but didn’t give you their contact details is not a lead and neither is someone whose contact details you have somehow obtained without their knowledge.
Salespeople sometimes use the word “lead” to refer to the latter when they are doing cold outreach but the correct term, in that case, is “sales prospect”.
This is important because you need to be crystal clear as to who does and who doesn’t qualify as a lead if you want to be effective at lead generation.
What is a Lead Generation Funnel

Lead generation is the process of converting potential customers into leads by persuading them to give you their contact details – usually their email addresses.
Typically, that is done via lead generation funnels (the Bait stage of the Value Ladder sales funnel).
Here’s how it works:
- You create a lead magnet that you offer to the potential customer in exchange for their email address.
- You create a landing page for that lead magnet.
- You drive traffic to that landing page.
Once the potential customer gives you their email address, they become a lead and enter your sales funnel.
The next step is to convert that lead into a paying customer by persuading them to buy your frontend product.
How to Build a Lead Generation Funnel
Here’s how you can build a lead generation funnel for your travel agency:
Step #1: Create a Lead Magnet
A lead magnet is a freebie that you offer to potential customers in exchange for their email address.
It can be anything that they can either download to their device or access online:
- A report
- An eBook
- An email course
- A video course
- A webinar
…etc.
For Example:
Let’s say that one of the travel packages that you are selling is a trip to Dubrovnik, Croatia.
You can create a Dubrovnik travel guide ebook with the best places to eat, attractions, daytrips, etc. and then use it as your lead magnet.
What’s great about the ebook format is that it’s super easy to keep ebook travel guides up to date which you can use to your advantage (e.g. “Dubrovnik Travel Guide 2023”).
Step #2: Create a Landing Page for Your Lead Magnet
Once you have your lead magnet, you need to create a landing page for it. It doesn’t have to be complicated – you can start with a simple squeeze page!
For Example:
Here’s how to create a landing page for your “Dubrovnik Travel Guide 2023” lead magnet:
- Come up with a headline that conveys the value of your free offer. In this case, you should emphasize that your travel guide can help the potential customer make the most out of their Dubrovnik trip.
- Add a subheadline that explains the offer. Mention that it’s a detailed, up-to-date, and FREE Dubrovnik travel guide that they can download immediately for instant access.
- Have an opt-in form where the potential customer can type in their email address. It can be either displayed immediately or appear once they click the call-to-action button.
- Make sure that the call-to-action button copy is offer-specific (e.g. “Get Your FREE Dubrovnik Travel Guide Now””) as opposed to generic (e.g. “Download”).
- Use a photo of Dubrovnik’s old town that’s overlooking the Adriatic Sea as the background image. Unsplash is a great source for beautiful, royalty-free photos.
We don’t recommend building your landing page from scratch if you don’t have any previous landing page design experience. Why?
Because marketers have been relentlessly optimizing landing pages for more than twenty years.
At this point, we know what works and what doesn’t, or, to be more precise, we know what’s most likely to work.
There are established landing page design best practices that you should follow if you want to maximize the conversion rate of your landing page.
Your best bet is to use a proven, high-converting landing page template that conforms to those best practices.
Our software, ClickFunnels, includes a template library that features landing page templates that have been optimized for conversions.
So why waste time reinventing the wheel when you can simply do what’s been proven to work?
Step #3: Start Driving Traffic to Your Lead Magnet Landing Page!
Once you have your lead magnet landing page, it’s time to start driving traffic to it.
Paid advertising is the best way to do that because paid traffic is targeted, predictable, and scalable.
Also, as a travel agent, you are in a fortunate situation when it comes to ad targeting because you can simply target people who have already expressed interest in relevant destinations.
For Example:
If you want to drive traffic to your “Dubrovnik Travel Guide 2023” lead magnet, you can target people in your local area that joined Dubrovnik groups on Facebook, searched for Dubrovnik hashtags on Instagram, and watched Dubrovnik travel videos on YouTube.
You can create test campaigns on each of these social media platforms and start running them with small daily budgets.
Once you see which campaign performs the best, you can start increasing its daily budget and optimizing it.
And then, once you figure out how to run ads profitably, you can start scaling your campaign.
You can also use conversion rate optimization to 2x, 5x, or even 10x your funnel profits!
Should You Have More Than One Lead Generation Funnel?
We recommend creating a lead generation funnel for your most popular travel package first.
Once you get that going, create another lead generation funnel for your second most popular travel package, and then another one for your third most popular travel package, and so on.
This will take time but it will be worth it!
Convert Email Subscribers Into Paying Customers With This Welcome Sequence
We don’t recommend hitting the potential customer with a sales pitch the moment you get their email address.
You haven’t built enough trust yet. Just because they downloaded your “Dubrovnik Travel Guide 2023” doesn’t mean that they trust you enough to give you their hard-earned money and let you handle their travel arrangements!
That’s why we advise sending the new subscriber this 6-email welcome sequence:
- Email #1: Who Are You? Introduce yourself to the new subscriber.
- Email #2: Where Did You Come From? Share your origin story. How did you become a travel agent?
- Email #3: What Do You Do? Explain what you do in more detail. How does it all work?
- Email #4: How Did You Gain This Expertise? Explain what makes you qualified to be a travel agent. Mention relevant education, experience, and accomplishments.
- Email #5: Who Do You Do This For? Explain who are your dream customers + share a case study on how you helped such a person have their dream vacation.
- Email #6: How Can You Do It For Me? Pitch your frontend offer and provide a link to its sales page.
Alternatively, you can use the “buffet” approach where you list your most popular travel packages with short descriptions and links to their sales pages, then encourage the new subscriber to check them out.
Bonus tip:
End emails 1-5 with a question and a call to action encouraging the new subscriber to hit the reply button and let you know what they think.
Ideally, you want to respond to every email from new subscribers, as that will help you build trust with them and make them feel appreciated.
The call to action for the sixth email should be either a link to your frontend offer’s sales page or the “buffet” links, depending on the approach you decided to take.
Write Emails That Sell With the “Hook, Story, Offer” Copywriting Framework
We recommend using the “Hook, Story, Offer” copywriting framework in your sales emails. That’s what we do and it has worked extremely well for us!
- Hook – Grab the subscriber’s attention with a compelling subject line. Keep in mind that the subject line is the most important element of email copy because it determines whether or not the subscriber will open it!
- Story – Tell the subscriber a captivating story that resonates with them on an emotional level. Don’t hesitate to share your own travel stories when appropriate!
- Offer – Transition from the story to the sales pitch and then to the call to action.
Here’s how Russell explains it:

Launch a Weekly Email Newsletter to Stay Top of Mind With Your Email Subscribers
Okay, so the new subscriber has completed the 6-email welcome sequence, now what?
No one appreciates being bombarded with endless sales pitches so you have to be careful with that. If you overdo it with sales emails, you will end up alienating your subscribers. It’s called “burning the list” in the online marketing jargon!
It also doesn’t make sense in the context of your business because most people take a few trips a year at most. So why send them pitch after pitch after pitch for various travel packages?
However, you want to stay top of mind with your email subscribers, so that they would think of you the next time they want to travel somewhere. And that means that you need to email them regularly. So how can you do it without being obnoxious?
We believe that launching a weekly newsletter is the best solution to this conundrum. People love reading about travel!
You can start with a simple link roundup where you share links to interesting content from around the web (articles, podcasts, videos, etc.).
Once you get that going, you can start expanding the scope of your newsletter by adding original content such as “how to” articles, destination profiles, and mini travel guides.
And once you get comfortable with that, you can expand the scope of your newsletter even further by adding traveler profiles and interviews.
If you don’t have time to produce a weekly newsletter, you can always outsource it to a freelance writer.
You can find writers on job boards such as ProBlogger Jobs, Best Writing, and Dynamite Jobs.
Alternatively, you can look for small travel bloggers whose content you like and reach out to them directly.
Use Email Segmentation
Email segmentation is an email marketing practice where you segment your email list based on various criteria such as:
- Traffic source
- Demographic data
- Subscriber behavior
- Browsing history
- Purchase history
…etc.
You can use email segmentation to:
- Send emails to specific subscriber segments
- Exclude specific subscriber segments
For Example:
Let’s say that you have a 24-hour sale for a Venice, Italy travel package.
You might want to exclude people who have recently bought that package from the sales email. Why?
Because they are unlikely to want to go back so soon and might get upset that they have paid the full price for their recent trip.
Also, if they are currently in Venice, sending them a sales email for a trip to Venice will look goofy!
Use Marketing Automation
Marketing automation is an email marketing practice where you create automated workflows based on behavioral triggers.
That allows you to automatically tailor your email content to each subscriber.
For Example:
If your travel agency offers various types of travel packages (e.g. beach vacations, hiking trips, historical excursions, etc.), you might want to add a seventh email to your welcome sequence.
Give the new subscriber a list of travel package type options and ask them to click on the type that they are the most interested in.
Then create automated workflow branches for each type so that you could send them relevant offers based on their answer.
Say, if someone indicated that they are the most interested in hiking trips, you can automatically send them hiking trip offers.
Why send a hiking enthusiast an offer for a wild party weekend in Ibisa, Spain when you could pitch them a travel package to Zakopane, Poland instead?
Don’t Forget to Prune Your Email List!
As your email list grows, you will inevitably accumulate inactive subscribers.
This dead weight is bad because it costs money, damages deliverability, and distorts email marketing metrics.
That’s why we recommend creating an automated workflow for pruning your email list:
- Set up a behavioral trigger – If the subscriber hasn’t opened your emails in three months, this pruning sequence should be activated.
- Send them a confirmation email – Asking them to confirm that they want to stay subscribed to your email list by clicking a confirmation link.
- Split the workflow into three paths –
- If they didn’t open the confirmation email then remove them from your list.
- If they did open the email but didn’t click the confirmation link also remove them from your list.
- If they opened the email and clicked on the confirmation link keep them on your list.
That way, you will automatically remove inactive subscribers, which will help you ensure that your email list remains engaged as it grows.
