Nowadays no one has the patience to deal with poorly performing websites.
So if your website’s performance is not up to par, people will simply leave and never come back.
That’s why today we are going to discuss seven ways to improve it.
- What Is Website Performance?
- Website Performance Tip #1: Switch To Dedicated Hosting
- Website Performance Tip #2: Monitor Uptime

What is Website Performance?
Website performance is a combination of three factors:
- Website uptime
- Website speed
- Website functionality
Let’s take a closer look at each of them.
Website Uptime
Uptime is a metric that shows the percentage of time that website is available online.
The web hosting industry standard is 99% uptime which means that you can expect your website to be available 99% of the time.
Meaning, every year, out of 365 days, you can expect your website to be available online for 361 days.
Note that a 1% decrease in uptime means that your website will be unavailable for additional 3.65 days.
It’s important to put this into perspective in financial terms. Say, if you have an online store that generates a $100,000 yearly revenue, its average daily revenue is $273.97. That’s how much an average day of downtime would cost you in lost potential revenue.
Of course, eCommerce revenue tends to fluctuate throughout the year, so you’d likely lose less potential revenue on an average Tuesday and more if your website goes down right before the winter holidays.
But the point is that downtime will inevitably cost you money.
It may seem like there’s not much difference between 98% uptime and 99% uptime. But it can mean losing thousands upon thousands of dollars in potential revenue. So make sure that you take uptime seriously.
Website Speed
Website speed, also known as site speed, is a metric that shows how long it takes for your website to fully load. Say, if it takes 3 seconds, then your website speed is 3 seconds.
Meanwhile, page loading speed is a separate but related metric that shows how long it takes for an individual web page to load.
The reason why you should care about site speed and the page loading speed is this:
Typically, the faster the page loads, the better it converts.
According to Portent’s study where the company analyzed over 100 million page views across 20 B2B and B2C sites:
On average, a site that loads in 1 second has a conversion rate 3x higher than a site that loads in 5 seconds and 5x higher than a site that loads in 10 seconds.
That means that literally every second counts – each additional second is almost certainly costing you money in lost potential revenue!
Website Functionality
Finally, there’s website functionality – how well does your website work?
Watch out for:
- Broken links
- JavaScript errors
- Images that fail to load
…etc.
All that interferes with user experience.
Moreover, it conveys a lack of professionalism, which will erode trust.
Why should anyone give you their hard-earned money when you aren’t even competent enough to take care of your own website?
Website Performance Tip #1: Switch to Dedicated Hosting
There are two types of web hosting:
- Shared hosting which means sharing a hosting server with other websites
- Dedicated hosting which means hosting your website on a dedicated server
Usually, when people start an online business, they go with the former because it’s the more affordable option.
However, this often turns out to be a penny-wise, pound-foolish decision, since shared hosting typically leads to both more downtime and slower site speed.
That’s why we advise investing in dedicated hosting instead – having a server all for yourself means that you won’t have to worry about other websites slowing down or crashing your website.
Also, hosting companies tend to prioritize their dedicated hosting customers, so you will also likely get better customer support.
This might not seem like a big deal but if your website goes down unexpectedly, you will appreciate having priority customer support!
Website Performance Tip #2: Monitor Uptime
Talking about your website going down unexpectedly…
That will almost certainly happen at some point in time, so you want to make sure that you are notified immediately when it does.
We recommend investing in website monitoring software that monitors your website’s performance for you and lets you know the moment something goes wrong.
UptimeRobot is a solid option because it offers various integrations that allow you to get notifications via email, text messages, Slack, and other channels.
There’s a free plan so you can use it to check out this software and see if you like it.

Website Performance Tip #3: Invest in Cybersecurity
You should also consider various cyber threats when thinking about uptime. Say, a distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS) can be used to take down your website. This is something that you need to be prepared for.
If you aren’t a cybersecurity expert yourself, you might want to consider hiring one to do a threat assessment for you. Ask them what measures you should take to avoid the most likely scenarios.
You may also want to inquire who is the best person to call if you realize that your website is under attack. They might tell you to call them or they might recommend someone else. But you should find a cybersecurity expert who you can turn to in case of a crisis. Don’t wait until something bad happens!
Also, we are discussing cybersecurity in the context of website performance because that’s the subject of this article, but it’s about so much more than just keeping your site up and running.
You need to protect yourself, your business, and your customers. Remember, consumers are becoming increasingly privacy-conscious, which means that a security breach would likely result in serious damage to your brand. Some brands never recover. So don’t let it happen. Invest in cybersecurity.
Website Performance Tip #4: Choose the Right Software
No one builds websites from scratch anymore.
There are so many site builders, content management systems, and eCommerce platforms out there that doing that simply doesn’t make sense.
Typically, entrepreneurs choose the software solution that best meets their needs and then uses it as a foundation of their online business.
They usually evaluate different options based on functionality, user interface, and price, but often neglect to compare them in terms of website speed.
It’s important to understand that site speed can vary wildly from platform to platform.
Say, at first glance, WordPress and Ghost might seem quite similar, as they are both blogging platforms.
However, according to Ghost, independent tests have found Ghost to be up to 1900% faster than WordPress, which is crazy!
Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you should choose Ghost over WordPress, as both options have pros and cons. But it’s definitely something to take into account.
Also, once you pick a platform that you intend to use as the foundation of your online business, you should be mindful about adding any extras to it such as plugins, widgets, and extensions.
In fact, you may want to examine whether you really need everything that’s included in the default settings. It might make sense to disable some features that aren’t necessary.
Keep in mind that anything that you add to your website will have an impact on its speed!
Website Performance Tip #5: Reduce Image Sizes
mages add up over time and that can drastically slow down your website.
Here’s how to avoid that:
- Use JPEG image format as your default. It contains less data than the PNG format, so the same image will likely be smaller as a .jpeg file than it would be as a .png file. You can use ezgif.com to convert PNG images to JPEG images.
- Minimize each image with TinyJPG. Size savings vary from image to image, but they tend to be significant.
- Include all this in your standard operating procedure (SOP) for creating content.
Also, if you already have an established website, we suggest taking the time to replace all images with minimized JPEG versions.

Website Performance Tip #6: Use Google’s PageSpeed Insights
Google has a free tool called PageSpeed Insights.
All you need to do is type in your website’s address and click “Analyze”.
You’ll get a detailed analysis of both the mobile and the desktop versions of your website.
It will include:
- Core vitals assessment
- Diagnostic issues
- Suggestions for improving site speed
These suggestions will likely be highly technical, so if you are not a techie yourself, you might want to consider hiring a web developer to help you implement them.

Website Performance Tip #7: Minify HTML, CSS, and JavaScript Files
Your website’s core structure consists of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files. You can improve your site speed by minimizing them.
Basically, you want to remove everything that isn’t absolutely necessary, such as unnecessary characters, line breaks, comments, etc.
You can do it yourself if you are familiar with web development or you can hire a web developer to do it for you.
The smaller the files, the faster your website will load, so you want to reduce their sizes as much as possible!
