5 Easy Ways To Increase Your Website Speed

5 Easy Ways To Increase Your Website Speed

Last updated on October 20th, 2025 at 11:12 am

Website speed might seem like some boring and irrelevant technical metric, but it’s actually extremely important for online businesses!

That’s why today we are going to discuss five easy ways to increase it.

What is Website Speed?

Website speed, also known as site speed, is a metric that shows how long it takes for your website to fully load.

Say, if it takes 3 seconds, then your website speed is 3 seconds.

Page loading speed is a different but related metric that shows how fast an individual page loads.

Obviously, if you increase the page speed of the various page on your website, your site speed will improve as well.

When Backlinko analyzed 5.2 million desktop and mobile pages back in 2019, they found that the average page loading speed was:

  • 10.3 seconds on desktop
  • 27.4 seconds on mobile

As far as page speed loading goes, 10.3 seconds and 27.4 seconds is an absolute disaster.

We’ll explain why in the next section.

What Is Website Speed?

Why Should You Care About Website Speed?

There are three main reasons why you should care about website speed:

  1. Conversion rates
  2. Bounce rates
  3. Search traffic

Let’s take a closer look at each of them:

Conversion Rates

Typically, the faster the page loads, the better it converts.

According to Portent’s study where the company analyzed over 100 million page views across 20 B2B and B2C sites:

A site that loads in 1 second has a conversion rate 3x higher than a site that loads in 5 seconds and 5x higher than a site that loads in 10 seconds.

This means that every additional second costs you money in lost potential revenue. You can’t afford to have slow-loading pages in your sales funnel!

Why Should You Care About Website Speed?

Bounce Rates

Back in 2017, Google analyzed 11 million mobile landing pages to see whether page loading speed had an effect on bounce rates

It turned out that even going from 1 second to 3 seconds increased the probability of a bounce by 30%, while going to 5 seconds increased it to 90%.

While this study is half a decade old, there’s no reason to believe that this negative correlation between page loading speed and bounce rates has disappeared since then.

In fact, if anything, we can probably safely assume that it’s even more pronounced today.

Search Traffic

It is well known that Google uses page speed as one of its search algorithm’s ranking factors and has been doing that since at least 2010

This means that if you want to generate organic search traffic, it’s important to optimize your website for speed.

After all, if it takes ages to load, you will likely be outcompeted by faster websites.

Okay, so now that you know why you should care about site speed, let’s talk about how you can improve it:

Website Speed Tip #1: Switch to Dedicated Hosting

There are two types of web hosting:

  • Shared hosting which means sharing a hosting server with other websites
  • Dedicated hosting which means hosting your website on a dedicated server

We highly recommend investing in dedicated hosting.

Doing so will almost certainly improve your site speed because you won’t have to share server resources with other websites.

It’s also worth noting that dedicated hosting also has other benefits such as higher uptime.

When you share a server with other websites, your website might go down because one of the neighboring websites experienced a sudden spike in traffic.

While using dedicated hosting doesn’t guarantee that your website won’t ever go down unexpectedly, at least it won’t go down because of something that has nothing to do with you.

Moreover, hosting companies typically prioritize dedicated hosting customers, which means that you will likely get better customer support than you would otherwise.

All things considered, if you are serious about growing your online business, then dedicated hosting is probably a worthwhile investment.

Website Speed Tip #2: Choose the Right Software

Pretty much no one is building websites from scratch nowadays. Entrepreneurs certainly don’t have time for that!

They usually use a site builder, a content management system, or an eCommerce platform to create their websites.

Typically, when entrepreneurs are evaluating various software options, they look at functionality, user interface, and price.

But it’s also important to consider website speed because it can vary wildly from one platform to another even when these platforms appear to be similar at first glance.

For example, the most popular content management system in the world is WordPress, which powers 43% of all websites

Due to its popularity, WordPress is often seen as the go-to choice by entrepreneurs who want to set up a website for their online business.

However, this content management system is also known for being bloated – there are all kinds of scripts, plugins, and features that drastically slow down websites built with it.

In fact, one of its major competitors, Ghost, claims that independent tests have found Ghost to be up to 1900% faster than WordPress. Pretty crazy!

Choose the Right Software

Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you should choose Ghost over WordPress, but it’s definitely something to take into account.

Moreover, once you pick a platform that you intend to use as a foundation for your online business, you need to be careful with plugins, widgets, extensions, etc.

Say, one of the reasons why WordPress is such an attractive option is the ecosystem surrounding it – you can find a plugin for pretty much anything that you can think of.

However, if you are not mindful of how all these extras affect your site speed, you might drastically slow down your website without even realizing it.

Also, if you are working with web developers, you need to make sure that they consider site speed when making web development decisions.

We recommend prioritizing site speed over pretty much everything else.

Remember, literally every second counts, so think carefully before adding anything to your website that’s not absolutely necessary.

Website Speed Tip #3: Reduce Image Sizes

Image sizes add up over time and can have a significant impact on site speed.

That’s why one of the easiest ways to speed up your website is to reduce image sizes as much as possible.

First of all, consider using the .jpeg image format as the default.

It contains less data than .png, which means that the same image will likely be smaller as a .jpeg file than it would be as a .png file.

If you need to convert .png images to .jpeg images, there are quite a few free apps out there that allow you to do that (e.g. ezgif.com).

Once you have the .jpeg file, you should use an app like TinyJPG to reduce its size even more.

Only upload the image to your website once you are sure that it is the smallest possible version of it.

All this should be a part of your standard operating procedure checklist for content creation.

If you are working with freelance writers, make sure that it is documented in their standard operating procedure checklist and that they know how to do everything we just described.

Otherwise, they will simply grab images from the Internet and upload them as they found them, which will likely slow down your website.

Also, if you already have an established website, but have never paid any attention to image sizes before, then you might want to go through your archives and replace all images with minimized .jpeg files.

That alone will likely produce a significant improvement in your website speed.

Website Speed Tip #4: Use Google’s Page Speed Insights to Optimize Your Website

Okay, so everything that we have discussed so far are things that pretty much anyone can do, regardless of whether they are tech-savvy or not.

However, there are also a bunch of technical details that can be optimized if you have advanced tech skills.

Google has a free tool called PageSpeed Insights that can help you identify various site speed optimization opportunities.

All you need to do is type in your website’s address and click the “Analyze” button.

You will get a detailed analysis of both the mobile and the desktop versions of your website.

It will show you core vitals assessment, diagnostic issues, and opportunities for improvement.

You can either implement the suggestions yourself or you can hire a web developer to do it for you.
