- Jimdo is a company that sells a website builder and an ecommerce platform.
- Their software is designed to empower small business owners to create their own websites and online stores without having to learn how to code or hire a web developer.
- Jimdo’s main strength is the simplicity of their website builder which allows you to quickly create your own website.
- However, this simplicity is also its main weakness, because it means that your creative freedom is limited by the app’s basic functionality.
- One potential issue is that the combination of limited website builder functionality + industry-specific templates + industry-specific photos might lead to a bunch of websites in the same industry that look pretty much the same.
- The ecommerce platform is also basic, especially compared to the major competitors such as Shopify, WooCommerce, or BigCommerce.
- There’s a neat free logo maker tool. It’s super basic, but it’s enough to create a company logo. You can always hire a graphic designer to create a “proper” logo for you later.
- There appear to be just a few native integrations with payment processors and social media apps. This might make it difficult to automate your workflow.
- Jimdo has two separate pricing structures: website builder pricing and ecommerce platform pricing. Neither is competitive considering the limited functionality.
- We aren’t entirely sure why anyone would choose Jimdo’s ecommerce platform over the previously mentioned major ecommerce platforms, especially over Shopify which seems like a much better option for new ecommerce businesses.
- Several unhappy customers have complained about the company’s alleged business practices that seem predatory to us. The main issue appears to be the difficulty of canceling one’s subscription. The company has also allegedly made legal threats against some of those unhappy customers. We recommend you to read those reviews and make up your own mind.

What is Jimdo?
Jimdo is a German company that sells a website builder and an ecommerce platform.
Their software is designed to empower small business owners to create their own websites and online stores without having to learn how to code or hire a web developer.
It’s worth noting that several unhappy customers have shared their experiences on software review platforms Capterra and G2.
According to these reviews, the company has allegedly:
- Made it difficult to cancel their subscriptions
- Didn’t notify them when their subscriptions were up for renewal
- Resorted to legal threats against customers on at least two separate occasions
Of course, we don’t know how much of that is true, but these issues came up in several customer reviews, so we felt that it was our duty to inform you about them.

Okay, with all that out of the way, let’s discuss Jimdo’s software…
Jimdo’s Features
Jimdo has two separate products:
- Website builder
- Online store platform
Let’s take a look at the features of each…
Website Builder
Easy-to-Use Site Editor
It’s probably safe to say that Jimdo’s main strength is its site editor.
It was designed with a small business owner who just wants to quickly create their company’s website in mind.
This means that it has basic functionality, which can be a double-edged sword.
On the one hand, limited features make it easy to use, so if you just want to be able to create a simple website, it might be an okay solution.
On the other hand, limited features also mean that there’s only so much you can do with this site editor, so it probably won’t suit you if you want to have more creative freedom.
Also, you don’t need any coding knowledge to build a website with Jimdo, which is certainly a plus in the eyes of the company’s target audience.
However, if you do know how to code, you will likely find the simplicity of this editor limiting rather than empowering.
That being said, if you know how to code, then you are not Jimdo’s target audience, so this isn’t so much criticism against the company as it is an observation about potential incompatibility.
Templates
With Jimdo, you don’t need to create a website from scratch, you can use one of their pre-made templates.
While these templates don’t necessarily feature cutting-edge web design, they do look aesthetically pleasing, so if you just want a pretty website one of them should do.
One potential issue here is that we aren’t sure how much these templates are optimized for conversions. Keep in mind that just because a page looks good doesn’t mean that it converts well.
Another potential issue here is that these templates combined with the site editor’s limited functionality might mean that there are a bunch of small business websites out there that look pretty much the same.
While it might make sense to observe the common web design practices of your industry (see Jakob’s Law), you don’t want your site to look identical to your competitors’ sites.
Responsive Web Design
Nowadays it’s not enough to have a website that looks great on desktop computers, you also need to make sure that it looks great on mobile devices as well.
Websites created with Jimdo’s site editor are responsive, meaning that they automatically adjust to the device that the visitor is using, whether it’s desktop or mobile.
One less thing to worry about.
Breaking News Banner
This is an interesting feature that allows you to add a “breaking news” banner to your website to draw the visitor’s attention to a specific announcement.
It can be handy when you want to inform your customers about a new location, changes in opening hours, a seasonal sale, etc.
Legal Text Generator
Jimdo comes equipped with a legal text generator that can help you create your legal pages such as Terms and Conditions.
It’s worth noting that legal pages generated with this tool are compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
GDPR is a legal framework that governs the collection and use of personal data in the European Union and must be observed by all businesses operating within the European Union (even if they are not based there).
Legal stuff is probably the least fun part of running a business. It’s tedious, it’s boring, it’s easy to forget… But if you don’t have all your legal bases covered, you might find yourself in a world of trouble.
That’s why Jimdo’s Legal Text Generator can certainly be handy, especially if you want to be able to sell to visitors from the European Union without running into legal problems.
That being said, all this is too important to be completely outsourced to an app, so you might want to get a lawyer to look through those pages before you publish them. Better safe than sorry!
Copyright-Free Photos
Jimdo’s image library is another neat feature.
It gives you access to a wide variety of high-quality, copyright-free photos that suit your industry. No need to pay royalties!
However, this raises more concerns about your site looking the same as your competitors’ sites.
Now we are talking about a limited site editor functionality combined with a limited number of industry-specific templates combined with a limited number of industry-specific photos.
This may not be the best recipe for building a website that stands out and is memorable.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Jimdo has some search engine optimization features that can help you increase the likelihood of your web pages ranking on Google for relevant keywords.
However, these features are pretty basic, so while they are certainly better than nothing, you probably shouldn’t expect impressive results.
That being said, if you know nothing about SEO, this functionality might be useful because Jimdo gives you specific SEO tips that can guide you in the right direction.
Analytics
Jimdo offers analytics that allows you to keep track of the core website metrics.
While this won’t be enough for those who want to implement advanced online marketing strategies, it will likely be appreciated by people who simply want to see the most important data.
If you belong to the latter category, this in-built analytics functionality will save you from having to deal with Google Analytics, which is a decent tool but is way too complex for the needs of most small businesses.
Online Store Platform
Okay, so we have covered Jimdo’s website builder, what about their eCommerce platform?
It allows you to create a basic online store, add products to it, and connect it to various payment processors. Once all that is done, you can start selling.
Again, the functionality is limited, which is a more serious issue when building an online store than it is when building a regular website.
To be honest with you, it’s not entirely clear to us as to why anyone would want to go with Jimdo as opposed to one of the major eCommerce platforms such as Shopify, WooCommerce, or BigCommerce.
That being said, let’s take a look at some of its features…
Local Pickup
Every eCommerce entrepreneur knows what a hassle shipping can be. Products get lost, break en route, take ages to reach the customer, etc.
That’s why it makes sense to offer a local pickup option to customers who live in your area.
Why use the postal service to ship a product to your next-door neighbor when they could just pop in and pick it up themselves?
Jimdo has a local pickup feature that allows customers to shop and pay online, then pick up their purchases locally.
That saves you the hassle of shipping that product and allows the customer to get it as soon as it’s ready. It’s a win-win!
No Commission Fees
With Jimdo, you don’t have to worry about commission fees, at least not when it comes to your eCommerce platform.
You’ll still have to pay payment processor fees, though, but that’s between you and the payment processor company.
Various Payment Options
Talking about payments, you can offer your customers several payment options, including:
- PayPal
- SEPA
- Direct-Debit
Also, users with premium plans in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland can purchase the Payment Options Plus add-on to provide more options.
It’s worth noting that the choice of payment options is quite limited when compared to the previously mentioned major eCommerce platforms.
Domain Name + Hosting
Interestingly, Jimdo lists their domain name feature as a separate product, though they don’t appear to be offering domain names as standalone products (you need to create a Jimdo website first).
They also say that hosting is included, but they don’t seem to provide much information on this, so it’s unclear what they are offering.
They don’t seem to be selling hosting packages as separate products either, so we assume that you need to create a Jimdo website to get it.
Logo Maker
There’s also a free logo maker that you can use to quickly create a company logo.
Here’s how it works:
- You answer a few questions about your company
- Jimdo generates a logo for it
- You choose a graphic to accompany it
It’s a super basic tool.
Nevertheless, entrepreneurs often get stuck on ultimately irrelevant details such as the company logo, so creating one with Jimdo editor in a few minutes can allow you to focus on what actually matters (generating profit).
You can always hire a graphic designer to create a “proper” logo for your business once you have money coming in.
Jimdo Integrations
This list is not exhaustive. It simply highlights some of the more noteworthy integrations that Jimdo offers.

- Stripe
It appears that Jimdo offers very few native integrations compared to some of the other website builders and eCommerce platforms.
This is an issue because it might make it difficult to automate your workflow.
Jimdo Pricing
Jimdo’s offers two separate pricing structures:
- Website builder pricing
- Ecommerce platform pricing
Let’s take a look at each of these options…
Website Builder
The website builder has three pricing plans:
- Play plan that is free and offers basic functionality + a jimdosite.com subdomain.
- Start plan that costs $9/month (billed annually) and offers everything in the play plan + a free domain for the first year. Note that “free domain” means that €20 will be subtracted from the annual payment. This offer is only valid for certain domains.
- Grow plan that costs $15/month (billed annually) and offers everything in the Start plan + search engine optimization, social marketing, and personalized support within 4 hours.
Ecommerce Platform
The eCommerce platform has two pricing platforms:
- Basic plan that costs $15/month (billed annually) and offers basic eCommerce functionality + exporting orders.
- Business plan that costs $19/month (billed annually) and offers everything in the basic plan + product variants, social marketing, and social selling.
Jimdo doesn’t seem to offer a free trial, but they say that you can cancel your account within 14-days, so we assume that is a 14-day money-back guarantee.
The company’s pricing might seem okay at a first glance, but when you consider how limited their software is, it becomes clear that these prices are not competitive.
For Example:
Shopify is arguably the best eCommerce platform for new eCommerce businesses.
Their Basic plan costs $29/month, billed monthly, with a 14-day, no-credit-card-required free trial.
That’s only $10 more per month for better functionality and less risk.
Okay, Jimdo offers a “free” domain name for the first year in the form of a €20 discount on the annual subscription fee, so that saves you an additional few bucks a month that year. But you’d probably be better off getting a domain name on Namecheap.
Then we need to think about the previously mentioned experiences of unhappy customers.
If the experiences recounted in those reviews are true, then this company has engaged in business practices that we consider to be predatory by making it difficult for their customers to cancel their subscriptions.
That is certainly something to consider, especially given that Jimdo charges annually.
It means that if you don’t want to use their software anymore, but fail to cancel on time because you weren’t notified about the upcoming renewal, you might have to pay $100+ for something that you don’t need.
Of course, we can’t know if those reviews are accurate, but this definitely seems like a red flag.
