- Squarespace is a software company that was founded in 2004 and has since grown to become one of the dominant players in the website builder space.
- Their main product is a website builder that allows you to easily create both regular websites and online stores.
- To our understanding, their unique selling proposition is the company’s emphasis on design.
It’s indeed super easy to create stunning websites with this app because it comes with a wide variety of design templates that were created by world-class designers.
All you need to do is pick the one that suits your company’s needs the best and customize it. - That being said, we are somewhat concerned about this focus on aesthetics because we suspect that it comes at the expense of conversions. Do you want your site to look pretty or to make you money?
- Squarespace sells some important functionalities as separate products that are not included in their main website builder pricing (e.g. their email marketing app).
- Talking about the pricing, the website builder pricing can seem expensive when compared to some of the other options on the market but we believe that it is reasonable considering the app’s functionality.
- Squarespace is a great option for entrepreneurs who are bootstrapping an online business on a tight budget and can’t afford to pay for a bunch of specialized solutions.
- That being said…

What is Squarespace?
Squarespace is a software company that was founded in 2004.
According to them, they exist to “help people with creative ideas stand out and succeed.”
Squarespace’s main product is a website builder that allows you to easily create a beautiful website even if you don’t have any web development or web design skills to speak of.
Moreover, it comes equipped with an eCommerce functionality, so you can also use it to build an eCommerce business.
In 2018, the app was ranked as the second most popular website builder in the world with a market share of over 15%, right after Wix that took the #1 spot with a 22% market share.
It’s worth noting that Squarespace has received a lot of recognition for being a great place to work:
- It was listed by Fortune as one of the “Top 50 Best Workplaces for Parents”.
- It was listed by Built in NYC as one of the “100 Best Places to Work” for five years in a row.
- It was listed by Wealthfront as one of the “Career-launching Companies” for four years in a row.
So if it’s important to you that the companies that you buy products from treat their employees well, then Squarespace appears to not only meet but also exceed that expectation.
Squarespace’s Features
Here are some of Squarespace’s most noteworthy features.
Page Editor
Squarespace’s page editor is less flexible than the page editors of some of the other website builders but that’s not necessarily a flaw.
In fact, we believe that it’s a plus. Why?
Because limiting the creative freedom of the user can enable that user to create a better website than they would have otherwise. That’s the approach we take here at ClickFunnels as well.
So when Squarespace guides you through creating your website step-by-step while giving you limited options for customization, it’s probably for the best assuming that you don’t have web design and web development skills yourself.
However, if you do have web design and web development skills, then you can use them to customize your website any way you want with CSS and Javascript.
This feature is included in the Business plan, the Basic Commerce plan, and the Advanced Commerce plan.
That being said, if you want a drag-and-drop page editor that allows you to customize your website any way you want without coding, then Squarespace is probably not the best option for you.
Website Templates
One of Squarespace’s values is “Design is not a luxury”:
“We believe that great design should be available to everyone, and we are relentless in our pursuit of great design in everything we do”.
This isn’t some empty marketing talk. The company is indeed dedicated to great design. Arguably, their product’s main strength is the award-winning website templates that come with it.
These templates were created by world-class designers, cover all of the most common website builder use cases, and look stunning.
This means that you can create a beautiful website even if you have no web design skills whatsoever.
And due to the aforementioned lack of flexibility of Squarespace’s page editor, you don’t even have to worry about inadvertently ruining the design by misplacing page elements, picking clashing colors, etc…
The company places special emphasis on its portfolio templates, so if you need a portfolio website to show off your work, you might want to consider Squarespace.
One concern we have about Squarespace’s templates is how optimized for conversions they are.
You see, website builder companies typically focus on aesthetics when it comes to website templates.
And that’s perfectly fine if what you have in mind is a personal or a hobby website that is not intended to be monetized.
However, if you need a business website, then conversion rate optimization should come first, aesthetics second.
In fact, we have received criticism that ClickFunnels’ page templates look “outdated”, but here’s the thing:
We don’t care about keeping up with the latest web design trends. We care about giving our customers page templates that convert.
How do Squarespace’s templates measure up to ClickFunnels’ templates in terms of conversion rates?
We don’t know.
But what we do know is that pages that look the best don’t necessarily convert the best.
Blogging
Squarespace has an in-built blogging functionality which means that you can use it to launch a blog without having to deal with any third-party services.
It has all the features that you need to get started and allows you to:
- Write posts
- Edit posts
- Publish posts
- Schedule posts
- Set custom permissions
You can also use Squarespace’s analytics to track the performance of your blog, its SEO tools to optimize it for search engines, and its email marketing and social media tools to promote it.
All in all, the app’s blogging functionality is decent, so if you want to keep things simple, you can definitely use it to get your blog off the ground.
However, if you are serious about blogging, then it probably makes more sense to go with a specialized solution instead such as WordPress or Ghost.
Website Analytics
Squarespace comes with its own analytics functionality that allows you to see all the most important website metrics:
- Unique visitors
- Visits
- Pageviews
- Bounce rate
…and more.
You might have noticed that in our product reviews we tend to recommend going with specialized solutions instead of relying on the various features of all-in-one platforms.
However, when it comes to analytics, we don’t think that this approach is necessarily the best.
The most popular specialized solution for website analytics is Google Analytics. And we don’t have anything against it. It’s a great tool.
However, it’s a tool that was designed for marketers who run sophisticated marketing campaigns, not for the average online entrepreneur who just wants to keep track of the core website metrics.
In fact, it’s probably safe to say that a typical small business owner is likely to feel overwhelmed by Google Analytics complexity, not empowered by it.
That’s why we believe that Squarespace’s analytics is a great alternative to Google Analytics. It’s simple, easy to understand, and gives you the most important information. Plus, it comes with the software, so you don’t need to install anything.
Ecommerce Templates
Squarespace offers a wide variety of templates not only for websites but also for eCommerce stores.
Just as their website templates, their online store templates look stunning, no doubt about it.
However, here we are even more concerned about conversion rate optimization because while the URL of the relevant page of their website refers to “designs that sell”, the copy of the page is focused on the aesthetics, not conversions.
To us, this copywriting choice seems to indicate that the company is prioritizing aesthetics over conversions when it comes to their online store templates, which is a questionable approach to eCommerce, to say the least.
That being said, we can’t know for sure how well their online store templates convert without testing them, so we aren’t making any concrete claims here, just sharing our opinion.
The point is that when you are choosing a template for your online store, you should prioritize conversions over aesthetics, assuming that you want to maximize your revenue.
So be wary of online store templates that seem to be designed for aesthetics first and foremost.
Ecommerce Tools
Squarespace comes equipped with an eCommerce functionality that has all the basic features that you need to launch an eCommerce business + some advanced features that can help you take it to the next level.
It enables you to:
- Manage your inventory. You can add an unlimited number of products to your store!
- Create beautiful and informative product pages with images for each variant, embedded videos, etc…
- Automatically recommend related products that the customers might be interested in.
- Show when an item is low in stock or a part of a limited release. This allows you to take advantage of the persuasion principle known as scarcity.
- Give customers the option to create personal accounts so that they could enjoy a better customer experience.
- Sell subscriptions to create streams of recurring revenue.
- Send abandoned cart emails to recover some of the revenue that would have otherwise been lost to cart abandonment.
…and more.
Squarespace’s eCommerce functionality is certainly impressive, especially compared to some of the other popular website builders.
However, if all you need is the eCommerce stuff and you aren’t interested in Squarespace’s other features, then you might be better off going with one of the major eCommerce platforms such as Shopify, WooCommerce, or BigCommerce instead.
Scheduling
Squarespace makes it easy to sell not only products but also services.
Its scheduling functionality enables you to let customers book appointments online, which can significantly reduce your workload if you are currently taking appointments via your contact form, email, or phone.
It can also help you reduce the number of missed appointments with features such as automated appointment confirmations, reminders, follow-ups.
However, this scheduling functionality is sold as a separate product with its own pricing, it doesn’t seem to be included in the website builder pricing.
The scheduling app has three pricing plans:
- The Emerging plan costs $15/month (when paid monthly) or $14/month (when paid annually).
- The Growing plan costs $25/month (when paid monthly) or $23/month (when paid annually).
- The Powerhouse plan costs $50/month (when paid monthly) or $45/month (when paid annually).
This app is without a doubt convenient if you are already using Squarespace to power your website because it’s so easy to integrate.
However, it’s also quite expensive considering its functionality, so you might want to check out other popular scheduling apps before you make the decision.
Member Areas
Squarespace allows you to offer paid content that can only be accessed by subscribers.
That can be a great way to create a stream of recurring revenue and make your business more robust.
This functionality is convenient because everything is in one place. You can use Squarespace to upload content, set up restrictions, set up pricing, promote paid content via your newsletter, etc…
It’s also super easy to use, so if you find the technical side of the paid content business model overwhelming, Squarespace might be an option worth considering.
Email Marketing
Squarespace also offers an email marketing functionality.
While access to some of the basic features is free, this functionality is sold as a separate product and doesn’t seem to be included in the website builder pricing.
Squarespace’s email marketing product has four pricing plans:
- The Starter plan costs $7/month (when paid monthly) or $5/month (when paid annually).
- The Core plan costs $14/month (when paid monthly) or $10/month (when paid annually).
- The Pro plan costs $34/month (when paid monthly) or $24/month (when paid annually).
- The Max plan costs $68/month (when paid monthly) or $48/month (when paid annually).
The main difference between these plans is not so much functionality which is pretty much the same across them all but the campaign limits and emails per month limits.
It’s worth noting that all plans allow you to have an unlimited number of subscribers.
Just as with the scheduling app, Squarespace’s email marketing app is certainly a convenient option if you are already using their software to power your website.
That being said, you might want to consider going with a specialized solution that was designed specifically for your type of business instead (e.g. ConvertKit for content creators, SmartrMail or Drip for eCommerce, etc…).
24/7 Customer Support
Squarespace offers 24/7 award-winning customer support.
As the company puts it:
“Think of Squarespace as your very own IT department.”
This is certainly reassuring if you aren’t that confident in your own tech skills.
It’s also invaluable in emergencies when you need to get the problem fixed ASAP.
We applaud the company for its dedication to customer support and we advise you to take this into consideration when comparing Squarespace to other website builders.
Squarespace’s Integrations
This list is not exhaustive. It simply highlights some of the more noteworthy integrations that Squarespace offers.
- Domains and email integrations that include integrations with GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domains, and Google Workspace.
- Blogging integrations that include integrations with AMP and Disqus.
- Images integrations that include integrations with Dropbox, Getty Images, and Unsplash.
- Email marketing integration with MailChimp.
- Social media integrations include integrations with Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest.
- Marketing integrations include integrations with Amazon, Facebook Pixel, Instagram Shopping, Google Ads, and Google Analytics.
- Payment processor integrations include integrations with PayPal, Stripe, and Square.
- Shipping integrations that include integrations with FedEx, UPS, and USPS.
- A Zapier integration that allows you to automate your workflow by connecting Squarespace to thousands of popular web apps.
There’s also a bunch of third-party extensions available that you can use to expand the functionality of the app.
The number of native Squarespace integrations appears to be surprisingly small given how popular this website builder is.
However, the combination of the app features + native integrations + third-party extensions + Zapier integration gives you a ton of flexibility.
Squarespace’s Pricing
Squarespace has four pricing plans for its website builder app:
- The Personal plan costs $16/month (paid monthly) or $12/month (paid annually).
It includes the basic functionality of the app. - The Business plan costs $26/month (paid monthly) or $18/month (paid annually).
It includes everything in the Personal plan + various additional features such as CSS and Javascript customization, advanced web analytics, pop-ups and banners, and more. - The Basic Commerce plan costs $35/month (paid monthly) or $26/month (paid annually).
It includes everything in the Business plan + additional eCommerce features such as customer accounts, merchandising tools, eCommerce analytics, and more. - The Advanced Commerce plan costs $54/month (paid monthly) or $40/month (paid annually).
It includes everything in the Basic Commerce plan + additional eCommerce features such as abandoned cart recovery, subscriptions, advanced shipping, and more.
These prices aren’t as affordable as those offered by some of the other popular website builders.
However, it’s important to take the functionality of the app into account, not just its price tag. We believe that when you consider that, the pricing seems reasonable.
It’s also worth noting that you don’t need to pick a plan to create your website.

Keep in mind that they sell several functionalities that you might expect to be included in the website builder pricing as separate products, though.
Just because you see something listed on Squarespace’s website doesn’t mean it’s included in their main pricing, so make sure that you understand what’s included and what isn’t when it comes to choosing a plan.

So the question you should be asking is:
“What’s the point of having a website at all?”.
And we can answer that:
There is no point! Your website is losing you money. You need to ditch it ASAP!

Is Squarespace Right for You?
Squarespace is a great website builder that provides everything that you need to start selling online (though they do charge separately for some important features).
But we are skeptical of this type of all-in-one approach to software.
You see, building an app that solves one problem well is a challenge, so trying to build an app that solves a bunch of problems well seems like a doomed endeavor.
That is why we recommend entrepreneurs invest in specialized solutions (e.g. eCommerce software, blogging software, email marketing software, etc…).
However…Both of our co-founders have started their entrepreneurial careers as broke college kids, so we are well aware of what it’s like to try to bootstrap an online business on a tight budget. Every dollar counts when you are in that situation.
So if you simply can’t afford to invest in a bunch of specialized solutions at the moment, then Squarespace is an option that you might want to consider.
