The 7 Best Copywriting Tips For Entrepreneurs

The 7 Best Copywriting Tips For Entrepreneurs

Last updated on January 8th, 2026 at 01:21 pm

Our co-founder Russell Brunson believes that copywriting is the most important skill that an entrepreneur needs to have.

“Copywriting is what made me rich… It has more impact on how much money you make with your company than anything else,” he explains.

But you probably already have too much on your plate and don’t have the time to devote yourself to mastering copywriting.

So how can you get good at writing copy in the shortest amount of time possible?

Today we are going to share seven tips that can help you get better at copywriting FAST…

#1: Read “Copywriting Secrets”

Read "Copywriting Secrets"

Our friend Jim Edwards wrote a book called “Copywriting Secrets” that includes everything you need to know to get started with copywriting.

This book was designed to be as practical as possible – Jim gives you actionable advice that you can implement in your own copy.

In fact, you don’t even need to read the entire book to start putting his advice into practice, you can begin implementing it as you are reading it.

“Copywriting Secrets” is the single best resource that we are aware of for someone who wants to go from a complete novice to an effective copywriter in the shortest time possible. Interested?

#2: Do Extensive Customer Research

Do Extensive Customer Research

The most effective copywriters are the ones that understand their customers the best. That’s why customer research is the foundation of all good copywriting!

The easiest way to get started with customer research is to figure out where your dream customers hang out online and then observe the conversations happening there.

This could mean:

  • Joining Discord servers
  • Subscribing to subreddits
  • Registering to online forums
  • Paying for membership communities
  • Following relevant hashtags on Twitter

Investing in text analytics software can help you take this to the next level – text analysis allows you to analyze vast quantities of textual data and extract actionable insights from it in a short period of time.

Say, you could use text analytics software to analyze all tweets that include a particular hashtag. This is not humanly possible to do manually with popular hashtags.

You also want to consume the content that your dream customers consume – blog articles, podcasts, YouTube and TikTok videos, etc. Immerse yourself in their world!

Finally, if you are already making sales, you want to talk to your existing customers.

According to Gerald Zaltman, professor emeritus at the Harvard Business School, one-on-one customer interviews can yield deep insights:

“Many researchers tell us that one-on-one interviews are superior to focus groups.

That is, even a few conventional one-on-one interviews yield essentially the same data as several focus groups.

Additionally, there is now a lot of evidence that personal interviews yield deep insights that can’t be obtained from focus groups.

So, my preference is to conduct in-depth, one-on-one interviews that are enriched by using various techniques from clinical psychology and sociology.

Often, the results of such interviews can be used to design more comprehensive surveys. And properly designed surveys, when subjected to careful statistical analyses, can yield further insights into unconscious consumer thinking.”

You can reach out to your existing customers and ask them to do a 15-minute Skype call with you in exchange for a discount or free product samples.

People want to feel heard so getting existing customers to agree on an interview might be easier than you think!

#3: Use the “Hook, Story, Offer” Copywriting Framework

Use the "Hook, Story, Offer" Copywriting Framework

We recommend using the “Hook, Story, Offer” copywriting framework in all of your copy – from ads to landing pages to emails to sales pages.

Its structure is simple:

  • Hook – You hook the potential customer with an attention-grabbing headline.
  • Story – You create an emotional connection by telling the potential customer a captivating story that is relevant to them
  • Offer – You transition from the story to your sales pitch and end it with a clear call to action.

Here’s how our Russell explains it:

#4: Sell on Benefits and Support Your Pitch With Features

Sell on Benefits and Support Your Pitch With Features

The distinction between features and benefits is arguably the most important copywriting principle that you need to understand if you want to write copy that converts.

  • A feature is a function or a quality of a product (e.g. “These shoes are waterproof!”).
  • A benefit is the value that the customer will derive from that product (e.g. “These shoes will keep your feet dry!”).

People buy based on benefits which is why you should always emphasize them in your copy. As the old copywriter saying goes, “Features tell, benefits sell!”

Of course, you do need to mention features in your copy as well but you should use them to support your sales pitch.

You want to show the potential customer that the product in question has the features required to provide the benefits that you have promised.

Generally, the more expensive the product, the more attention you should give to its features because people use features to justify the purchase decisions that they make based on benefits.

Say, if we are talking about a lead magnet, then you only need to mention features to make it clear what that free offer entails.

In some cases, if your lead magnet is more comprehensive than usual, you can also use features to emphasize its value (e.g. “This is a free 387-page ebook…” or “This is a free 12-hour video course…”).

Meanwhile, if we are talking about expensive products, then you should provide a detailed feature list.

Also, keep in mind that the most important benefits of a product typically aren’t its direct benefits.

You need to use your understanding of the psychology of your dream customers to figure out what they really want and then emphasize how your product can give them that.

Say, the direct benefit of waterproof shoes is that they keep your feet dry, but it’s probably not what people who are looking to buy waterproof shoes really want.

What they really want is likely to spend more time outdoors, play in puddles with their kids, go fishing, etc.

That’s what you should emphasize in your copy!

#5: Provide as Much Social Proof as Possible

Provide as Much Social Proof As Possible

Social proof is a psychological principle that says that whenever people are unsure of what to do, they look at what others do in order to determine the best course of action.

In the business context, this means that whenever potential customers are unsure of whether they should trust you, they will want to know whether other people trust you.

That’s why you should provide as much social proof as possible in your copy.

There are two types of social proof:

  • Direct social proof that relates to the offer in question – This primarily means customer testimonials but it can also mean customer ratings.  For example, if you are selling software that has high ratings on sites like Capterra, TrustRadius, and G2, you might want to feature those ratings on your sales page.
  • Indirect social proof that relates to you as a person or to your business in general – This can mean mentioning relevant experience, credentials, and accomplishments, displaying “As Seen On” badges, featuring generic endorsements from well-known people, etc.

Social proof is incredibly powerful so if you don’t have any, you should go out there and acquire it. It can be a game-changer!

#6: Have a Clear Call to Action

Have a Clear Call to Action

All copy that you write needs to have a clear call to action – whether it’s an ad, an email, a sales page, or whatever.

You might think that it’s obvious what you want the potential customer to do next but you can’t just assume that – you need to tell them!

Just keep in mind that each piece of copy needs to have ONE conversion goal and you must be crystal clear on what that conversion goal is.

Your goal might be to persuade the potential customer to:

  • Click on an ad
  • Give you their email address
  • Click through to your sales page via the link in your email
  • Buy your product

…etc.

Note that the conversion goal is not the same thing as a call to action – you should only have ONE conversion goal, but you can use several calls to action.

Say, if you are using a medium-length landing page as your lead magnet landing page, you can have several call-to-action buttons that encourage the potential customer to get your lead magnet.

In that case, the conversion goal is to persuade the potential customer to give you their email address and all call-to-action buttons serve that purpose.

#7: Eliminate Financial Risk From the Purchase Decision

We recommend offering an unconditional, no-questions-asked 30-day money-back guarantee for all your products regardless of their price. Why?

Because the #1 obstacle that you need to overcome when selling online is the potential customer’s fear that they will end up regretting the purchase.

And that’s a completely understandable fear given that the potential customer can’t examine the product before buying it.

That’s why eliminating financial risk from the purchase decision by offering a money-back guarantee can help you increase conversion rates.

You can even take it to the next level with a “You’ve Gotta be Crazy” guarantee like this:

Eliminate Financial Risk From the Purchase Decision

It might seem silly to offer a guarantee like this for a $7 product but it means that the potential customer doesn’t have anything to lose by buying it – we have eliminated all financial risk from the purchase decision!

Write Fast Then Test!

One of the most common mistakes that entrepreneurs make when writing landing pages and sales pages is endlessly agonizing over every word.

You are not Hemingway, you aren’t writing a novel, the goal here isn’t to get a Nobel Prize in Literature.

What you should do is this:

Write the first version of your landing page or your sales page as fast as possible, then start driving traffic to it to see if it converts.

If it doesn’t convert, then you should figure out why. What’s the problem?

  • The offer? – It’s entirely possible that your offer simply doesn’t resonate with your dream customers. In that case, it’s best to drop it altogether, go back to the drawing board, and come up with something better.
  • The copy? – It’s also possible that your offer is great but the copy doesn’t convey its value. In that case, you should keep rewriting it until it works.
  • The traffic? – Finally, it’s possible that the offer is great and the copy does convey its value but the traffic is low-quality. In that case, you should improve your ad targeting.

And if your landing page or sales page does convert, then it’s time to start optimizing it with split testing!
