The 3 Best Niches for Email Marketing

The 3 Best Niches for Email Marketing

“The money is in the list!”

There’s a reason why online marketers say that.

A sizable, engaged email list is one of the most valuable assets that you can have as an entrepreneur.

In fact, we would argue that building an email list is the only way to create a sustainable online business.

But merely having an email list is not enough, you also need to know how to monetize it.

And when it comes to monetization, not all niches are made equal – some are much easier to monetize than others.

That’s why today we are going to take a closer look at the three best niches for email marketing.

What Will You Sell?

You can build an email list first and worry about monetization later.

After all, once you have an email list, you can always monetize it by:

  • Offering a paid subscription that would give access to premium content.
  • Selling ad space to businesses that want to promote their products and services to your subscribers.
  • Selling your own products and services or affiliate products and services.

However, we do want to encourage you to think things through before you start building your email list, as that will allow you to be more effective at email marketing.

Ideally, you want to begin by designing your sales funnel, even if you start with the most basic variation of the Value Ladder that only covers the Bait (lead magnet) and Frontend (inexpensive product or service) stages.

What Will You Sell?

That being said, if you find the idea of designing a sales funnel overwhelming and feel that you are getting stuck in analysis paralysis, then it’s best to simply pick one of these three lucrative niches and focus on getting your first 1,000 email subscribers.

Once you reach that 1,000 subscriber milestone, you’ll probably be in a much better position to figure out the best way to monetize your email list.

Lucrative Email Marketing Niche #1: Health

Lucrative Email Marketing Niche #1: Health

The health niche includes topics such as:

  • Nutrition
  • Exercise
  • Weight loss
  • Physical health
  • Mental health

…etc.

You need to be extremely careful with the claims that you make in this niche.

Not only do you have an ethical responsibility to provide accurate information but you can also be held legally liable if you publish inaccurate statements that then cause damage.

We only recommend going into this niche if you have extensive knowledge on the subject that you want to discuss, ideally obtained through formal education and supported with academic credentials.

And even if you do meet the above criteria, you might still want to consult a lawyer just in case, as the health niche is heavily regulated.

Lucrative Email Marketing Niche #2: Wealth

Lucrative Email Marketing Niche #2: Wealth

The wealth niche includes topics such as:

  • Personal finance
  • Career advancement
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Investment

…etc.

We recommend this niche to people who have achieved success in one of these areas and can teach others how to replicate that.

Note that “success” doesn’t necessarily have to mean being featured on the cover of “Forbes”. Have you achieved something that others want to achieve? That’s success!

You can also interview other people who have achieved what your audience wants to achieve and publish case studies in addition to sharing advice based on your own experience.

It’s best to niche down as much as possible, provided that the target audience is still large enough to allow you to build a substantial email list. The more specific your value proposition, the better!

Say, if you are good at salary negotiation, then you could focus on teaching salary negotiation tactics for a specific profession (e.g. software engineers).

While the wealth niche is much less regulated than the health niche, you should still be careful about the claims that you make, especially when it comes to giving personal finance, accounting, or investment advice.

You might want to consult a lawyer before you start building your email list to make sure that you don’t get into legal trouble.

Lucrative Email Marketing Niche #3: Relationships

Lucrative Email Marketing Niche #3: Relationships

The relationships niche includes topics such as:

  • Persuasion
  • Networking
  • Making friends
  • Dating
  • Marriage

…etc.

We recommend this niche to people who have achieved success in terms of networking, social life, or romantic relationships and can teach others how to do the same.

Again, “success” doesn’t necessarily have to be something spectacular, what’s important is that you have achieved something that other people want to achieve.

Just as with the wealth niche, you want to niche down as much as possible provided that your target audience is still large enough to allow you to build a substantial email list.

Say, don’t talk about making friends in general, focus on a specific demographic such as university students or people who just moved to a new city.

Needless to say, dating and romantic relationships are the most popular sub-niche in the relationships niche.

However, there are a ton of opportunities in platonic sub-niches as well, from improving one’s personal social life to expanding one’s professional network.

It’s probably safe to say that now that we spend more and more of our lives online, there’s a trend of increasing social isolation, which often leads to a vicious cycle of people becoming increasingly uncomfortable with social interactions and therefore isolating themselves even more.

But at the same time, we humans are social animals, so the need to connect with other people is still there and arguably can’t be fully met by virtual interactions.

This means that if you can help people improve their social skills, learn to navigate social interactions better, and build fulfilling social lives for themselves, it’s possible to make a lot of money in the process!

Which market does your business fall into within the top 3 niches?

How to Stand Out From the Competition

You know what’s the problem with these three email marketing niches?

Everyone knows that these niches are lucrative, which means that the competition is insane.

But it’s better to go into a niche with tons of competition than to go into a niche with no competition because a lack of competition typically indicates a lack of opportunities.

However, if you do decide to go into one of these three lucrative email marketing niches, you need to find a way to differentiate yourself from everyone else.

The best way to do that is to use a marketing strategy called “throwing rocks at the competition” which revolves around:

  • Challenging the conventional wisdom of your niche
  • Criticizing the approach of your main competitors
  • Taking a unique approach yourself

Say, for a long time, the conventional wisdom in the weight loss niche was “calories in, calories out”.

But then the low-carb folks showed up on the scene with various low-carb diets, from paleo to carnivore, and immediately got everyone’s attention by criticizing the “calories in, calories out” approach.

Obviously, you can’t be controversial just for the sake of being controversial if you want to build a sustainable business, your unconventional approach needs to actually produce results. Low-carb diets took off because they worked!

So look at your chosen niche. What are the unexamined assumptions? What is the conventional wisdom that goes unquestioned? What dogmas need to be discarded?

Find a way to bring something unique to the table and you’ll have a competitive advantage in a crowded market where everyone is saying the same thing.
