Design Your Sales Funnel First
The purpose of email marketing is to guide people through your sales funnel which means that no amount of strategies, tactics, and hacks will help if your sales funnel is a mess.
That’s why we recommend designing your sales funnel first so that you would understand the big picture.
There are several popular sales funnel models out there. So which one should you use for your business?
We believe that the most effective way to sell anything online is the Value Ladder sales funnel.
It was created by our co-founder Russell Brunson who then used it to take ClickFunnels from zero to $10M+ in annual revenue in just one year (it’s at $100M+ now!).
This sales funnel has four stages:
- Bait – You offer the potential customer your lead magnet in exchange for their email address.
- Frontend – You offer the potential customer your least expensive and least valuable product or service.
- Middle – You offer the customer a more expensive and more valuable product or service.
- Backend – You offer the customer your most expensive and most valuable product or service.
Ideally, you also offer a continuity program of some sort, meaning, a subscription product that generates recurring revenue.
We also recommend adding downsells, upsells, and cross sells to these core offers in order to maximize your revenue.

The reason why this sales funnel works so well is that it allows you to:
- Start the relationship with that person by offering free value.
- Nurture that relationship by continuing to provide free value via email.
- Build trust by providing progressively more paid value at each stage.
Here’s how Russell explains it:
And if the Value Ladder graph above seems overwhelming, don’t worry – you can create a basic Value Ladder sales funnel with just a lead magnet and a frontend offer, then build out the rest later.
Also, our software, ClickFunnels, is designed to help entrepreneurs like you build profitable sales funnels.
We have everything you need to get started:
- Proven sales funnel and landing page templates for all the most common use cases.
- A visual editor that allows you to easily customize those templates according to your needs.
- An email marketing functionality that you can use to start, grow, and monetize your email list.
You can also integrate ClickFunnels with Wix!

Grow Your Email List With a Lead Generation Funnel
Entrepreneurs often take a passive approach to building their email lists – they put a few opt-in forms on their websites and leave it at that.
Optimizing your website for lead generation is important but you need to be proactive if you are serious about email marketing. You can’t just sit back and wait for people to subscribe to your email list!
The best way to grow your email list is to create a lead generation funnel and then drive traffic to it with paid ads. This is the Bait stage of your Value Ladder sales funnel.
Here’s how it works:
- You create a lead magnet
- You create a landing page for that lead magnet
- You drive traffic to that landing page
Now let’s take a closer look at each of these three steps:
Step #1: Create a Lead Magnet

A lead magnet is a freebie that you offer to potential customers in exchange for their email address.
It can be anything that they can either download to their device or access online:
- A report
- An eBook
- An email course
- A video course
- A webinar
…etc.
For example:
Here are some of our digital lead magnets:
- “The Funnel Hacker’s Cookbook” (eBook)
- “Death of a Website” (webinar)
- “Funnel Scripts” (webinar)
- “Secret Funnel Strategy” (webinar)
- “Funnel Builder Secrets” (webinar)
- “5 Day Lead Challenge” (online course)
There are also advanced “FREE + Shipping” lead magnets where you offer a physical product for free but ask the potential customer to cover the shipping costs.
For example:
Russell has written three best-selling books on the subject of making money online.
All three books are available on Amazon but you can also get them from us for free provided that you pay for the shipping:
Of course, physical lead magnets are much more expensive to produce, plus you also have to store them somewhere.
If you have never built a lead generation funnel before, we recommend starting with a digital lead magnet because a physical one may be too risky from a financial perspective.
Regardless of whether you decide to go with a digital lead magnet or a physical lead magnet, you want to make sure that:
- Your lead magnet provides a solution to a problem that the potential customer is struggling with.
- That solution is either the same one or related to the one that your frontend offer addresses.
That way, your lead magnet will not only serve as bait that attracts potential customers but will also set the stage for the upcoming frontend offer pitch.
Also, keep in mind that people won’t give you their email addresses unless you offer them something super valuable in return.
That’s why the key to designing an effective lead magnet is to create something that your dream customers desperately want and then offer it to them for free!
Step #2: Create a Landing Page for That Lead Magnet
Once you have your lead magnet, it’s time to create a landing page for it.
We recommend starting with a simple squeeze page that has these three key elements:
- A headline that conveys the value of your free offer.
- An opt-in form where the potential customer can type in their email address.
- A call-to-action button that encourages the potential customer to get the lead magnet.
Consider using an aspirational background image that reminds the potential customer of what they want to achieve.
Alternatively, if you have a personal brand, you might want to use a photo of yourself as a background image.
You can also add various additional elements such as a subheadline that provides more information about your free offer, a few sentences of copy, social proof, etc.
Typically, these additional elements have a positive impact on the conversion rate, but you still need to A/B test everything just to be sure.
For example:
Here’s a simple, yet high-converting squeeze page that we use for our “The Funnel Hacker’s Cookbook” lead magnet:
Step #3: Start Driving Traffic to Your Lead Magnet Landing Page
Once you have your lead magnet landing page, it’s time to start driving traffic to it.
Paid advertising is the best way to do it because paid traffic is immediate, targeted, and scalable.
All major social media platforms allow you to run ads on them:
- YouTube
- TikTok
Choose the platform that makes the most sense for your business, create an ad campaign, and start running it with a small daily budget. Once you figure out how to run ads profitably, you can begin gradually scaling your campaign.
Alternatively, if you aren’t sure which platform to go with, you can set up ad campaigns on several platforms, start running them with small daily budgets, and see which one performs the best.
Once you identify the most promising campaign, focus on optimizing and scaling it.
Also, if you have a social media following, use it to drive traffic to your lead magnet landing page. Don’t promote your products and services, promote your lead magnet instead!
Convert Email Subscribers Into Paying Customers With This Welcome Sequence
Okay, so you got the potential customer’s email address, now what?
We don’t recommend immediately hitting them with a sales pitch for your frontend offer. You haven’t built enough trust yet!
Send them this 6-email welcome sequence instead:
- Email #1: Who Are You? Introduce yourself to the new subscriber.
- Email #2: Where Did You Come From? Share your origin story. How did you come to do what you do now?
- Email #3: What Do You Do? Explain what it is that you do. How does it all work?
- Email #4: How Did You Gain This Expertise? Explain what makes you qualified to do what you do. Mention relevant education, credentials, and accomplishments.
- Email #5: Who Do You Do This For? Describe your dream customers + share a case study on how you helped such a person to get the results that they wanted.
- Email #6: How Can You Do It For Me? Pitch your frontend offer and provide a link to its sales page.
Bonus tip:
End emails 1-5 with a question and a call to action encouraging the new subscriber to hit the reply button and let you know what they think.
Ideally, you want to respond to every email from new subscribers, as that will help you build trust with them and make them feel appreciated.
Note that this welcome sequence can work for company brands as well. You just need to adjust it: instead of talking about yourself, talk about your company!
Write Emails That Sell With the “Hook, Story, Offer” Copywriting Framework
We recommend using the Hook, Story, Offer copywriting framework in your sales emails. That’s what we do and it has worked extremely well for us!
- Hook – Grab the subscriber’s attention with a compelling subject line.
- Story – Tell the subscriber a captivating story that resonates with them on an emotional level.
- Offer – Transition from the story to the sales pitch and then to the call to action.
Here’s how Russell explains it:
Launch a Weekly Newsletter to Stay top of Mind With Your Email Subscribers
No one wants to be bombarded with endless sales pitches.
This means that you need to be careful with sales emails. Don’t overdo it or you will alienate your email subscribers!
However, if you want to stay top of mind with them, you need to email them regularly. So how can you do it without being obnoxious?
We believe that the best way to solve this conundrum is to launch a weekly newsletter. It will give you an excuse to reach out to your subscribers every week while providing free value!
Here’s a simple three-step plan that you can use to get it going:
- Start with a simple link roundup format where you share links to interesting content from around the web that is relevant to your subscribers.
- Expand the scope of your newsletter by adding original content such as “how to” articles.
- Expand the scope of your newsletter further by adding original interviews and case studies.
Only move to the next step once you have mastered the previous step, streamlined the process, and consistently published your newsletter at that level for at least three months.
And if you don’t have time to produce a weekly newsletter, you can always outsource that to a freelance writer.
You can find writers on job boards such as ProBlogger Jobs, Best Writing, and Dynamite Jobs.
Use Email Segmentation and Marketing Automation to Make Your Emails More Relevant
Generic emails don’t convert well.
Moreover, if a subscriber opens an email from you and finds that its content isn’t relevant to them, they will be less likely to open emails from you in the future.
And if this continues happening, they will eventually stop opening your emails altogether and unsubscribe. Or worse, mark you as spam!
That’s why it’s so important to make sure that your emails are as relevant to each subscriber as possible. But how can you do that?
This is where email segmentation and marketing automation come in.
Email Segmentation
Email segmentation is an email marketing practice where you create subscriber segments based on various criteria (subscriber behavior, browsing history, purchase history, etc.).
It allows you to:
- Target specific subscriber segments
- Exclude specific subscriber segments
This can be especially helpful if you are serving several distinct customer demographics!
Marketing Automation
Marketing automation is an email marketing practice where you create automated email workflows with behavioral triggers.
It allows you to tailor your email content to each subscriber based on their behavior (e.g. whether or not they opened the email, whether or not they clicked on the call-to-action link, etc.).

Don’t Forget to Regularly Prune Your Email List!
As your email list grows, you will inevitably accumulate inactive subscribers that never open your emails.
These inactive subscribers are a problem because they cost you money, damage your deliverability, and distort your email marketing metrics.
That’s why we recommend creating an automated workflow for pruning your email list:
- Set up a behavioral trigger – If the subscriber hasn’t opened your emails in three months, this pruning sequence should be activated.
- Send them a confirmation email asking them to confirm that they want to stay subscribed to your email list by clicking a confirmation link.
- Split the workflow into three paths:
- If they didn’t open the confirmation email then remove them from your list.
- If they did open the email but didn’t click the confirmation link also remove them from your list.
- If they opened the email and clicked on the confirmation link keep them on your list.
That way, you will automatically remove inactive subscribers, which will help you ensure that your email list remains engaged.
