Entrepreneurs often focus solely on lead quantity.
This is short-sighted because generating leads should never be seen as an end goal in and of itself.
After all, it doesn’t matter how many leads you bring in if you can’t convert any of them to paying customers, right?
That’s why today we are going to discuss eight ways to increase lead quality.
Want to learn how to get super high-quality leads?

#1: Apply the 80/20 Principle

Pareto principle, also known as the 80/20 rule, states that for many outcomes, around 80% of consequences come from around 20% of the causes.
In the business context, this means that it’s likely that around 80% of your revenue comes from around 20% of your customers.
The exact ratio doesn’t matter so don’t get hung up on the 80/20 distribution.
What’s important is that it’s likely that a minority of your customers are generating the majority of your revenue.
So it stands to reason that attracting more customers like that would have a disproportionate impact on your revenue.
That’s why we recommend analyzing your sales data to see what traits these lucrative customers tend to have in common.
Once you have identified these common traits, use them in your marketing campaigns to target people who are the most likely to become lucrative customers.
This should help you drastically increase lead quality if you do it right.
However, you will probably see a drop in lead quantity, which is to be expected when you start focusing on their quality.
Keep in mind that you need to maintain an equilibrium between lead quantity and lead quality, as going too far in either direction is unsustainable in the long run.
Ultimately, the only business metric that matters is profit, so if you aren’t sure whether a new approach to lead generation is working, take a look at your bottom line.
Are you making more money than you did before?
That should be your compass.
#2: Conduct Extensive Customer Research

Lead generation is heavily dependent on copywriting.
You need to grab the potential customer’s attention, then convince them to give you their email address. So how can you make your copy more persuasive?
Everyone loves talking about various copywriting tactics, techniques, and hacks.
However, what ultimately determines the persuasiveness of your copy is how well you understand your target audience.
That’s why the best way to improve it is to conduct extensive customer research.
You can do that by:
- Reading blogs
- Listening to podcasts
- Watching YouTube videos
- Reading YouTube comments
- Subscribing to subreddits
- Registering on niche online forums
- Joining exclusive paid communities
- Attending industry events
- Conducting surveys
And, of course, by talking to your dream customers one-on-one!
Here’s what you want to pay attention to when conducting customer research:
- Demographic traits aka objective facts about your dream customers. Gender, age, ethnicity, education level, occupation, income level, and so on.
- Psychographic traits aka the psychology of your dream customers. What is driving them? What do they want to achieve? What are they struggling with? What do they believe in? What are their values? Etc.
- The language that your dream customers use to express themselves. What words, metaphors, and imagery show up again and again?
Your ultimate goal should be to understand your dream customers better than they understand themselves.
Only then will you be able to write persuasive copy that resonates with them on a deep, emotional level.
#3: Create a Super Valuable Lead Magnet

A lead magnet is a freebie that you offer to potential customers in exchange for their email addresses.
It can be anything that they can either download to their device or access online:
- A report
- An eBook
- A video course
- An email course
- A masterclass
- A webinar
…etc.
What matters is that your lead magnet offers a solution to a problem that your dream customers are struggling with.
As we always emphasize when we are discussing this subject:
Your dream customers won’t give you their email addresses unless you offer them something super valuable in return.
That’s why the key to designing an effective lead magnet is to create something that your dream customers desperately want… And then give it to them for free!
For Example:
Nick Stephenson is a best-selling author and a business coach that teaches writers how to sell more books.
His lead magnet is a 7-day video course called “$0 to $1k Per Month: Author Marketing Training” where he discusses how to go from zero to earning $1,000 per month in book royalties.
Nick uses this lead magnet to generate leads for his online training program “Your First 10k Readers”.

#4: Create a Landing Page for Your Lead Magnet
In theory, you don’t need a lead magnet landing page, you can simply promote it on your website.
In practice, if you don’t have a lead magnet landing page, you are almost certainly leaving money on the table.
You can start with a simple squeeze page that has these three key elements:
- A headline that conveys the value of your free offer. How will it make the potential customer’s life better?
- An opt-in form where the potential customer can type in their email address. It can either be displayed immediately or shown once they click the call-to-action button.
- A call-to-action button that encourages the potential customer to download your lead magnet.
For Example:
Here’s a simple, yet high-converting landing page that we use for our “The Funnel Hacker’s Cookbook” lead magnet:

#5: Drive Traffic to Your Lead Magnet Landing Page
When you have a super valuable lead magnet + a high-converting landing page for it, the easiest way to generate leads is to drive traffic directly to your lead magnet landing page.
You can do that by:
- Running paid ad campaigns
- Promoting your lead magnet on social media
- Mentioning your lead magnet in guest posts, podcasts, interviews, etc…
For Example:
At the time of writing, we have 214k followers on Instagram. We use this social media platform to promote our lead magnets.
Here’s a post encouraging people to DM us to get our co-founder Russell Brunson’s book “Traffic Secrets” that we use as a lead magnet.

#6: Use “FREE + Shipping” Lead Magnets

Russell has written three best-selling books:
We use them all as “Free + Shipping” lead magnets:
You can get a physical copy of each of these books for free. All we ask is that you cover the shipping costs.
This approach helps us generate high-quality sales leads – someone who is willing to spend money to get a book about growing online businesses is likely to be interested in checking out our software.
By the way, all three books are available on Amazon, where they have over 1,000 customer reviews.
This increases their perceived value as lead magnets:
Instead of offering free ebooks like everyone else, we are offering free physical copies of “real books”.
The “FREE + Shipping” approach to lead magnets can work well for authors who have self-published a book but are also selling other products related to the subject of that book.
Just make sure that the math works!
#7: Have Several Lead Magnets

Different free offers appeal to different people, so it’s best to have more than one lead magnet.
For Example:
Here are some of our lead magnets:
- “DotCom Secrets” (book)
- “Traffic Secrets” (book)
- “Expert Secrets” (book)
- “Copywriting Secrets” (book)
- “The Funnel Hacker’s Cookbook” (eBook)
- “Death of a Website” (webinar)
- “Funnel Scripts” (webinar)
- “Secret Funnel Strategy” (webinar)
- “Funnel Builder Secrets” (webinar)
- “5 Day Lead Challenge” (online course)
As you can see, these lead magnets vary in terms of format, length, and required investment.
This allows us to reach more of our dream customers – someone who is not interested in Russell’s books might be interested in attending a free webinar, etc.
We recommend everyone to have more than one lead magnet but it’s especially important for companies that serve several distinct customer segments.
For Example:
Let’s say you have a business in the fitness niche.
You sell online courses where you teach people calisthenics skills from beginner to advanced.
It would probably make sense for you to have at least two separate lead magnets: one that targets men and another that targets women.
Men and women typically respond to different messaging, so having separate lead magnets + landing pages would likely help you generate more leads
The same applies to businesses that:
- Serve organizations of different sizes (e.g. from solopreneurs to small businesses to medium businesses).
- Cater to people who have related but different goals (e.g. some want to learn French, others want to learn Japanese).
- Target people in different locations (e.g. both North America and South America, several different countries in the same region, etc.).
…etc.
While you can get away with just one generic lead magnet in these situations, having several lead magnets that target distinct customer segments would likely be a more effective approach to lead generation.
#8: Make Your Dream Customers Jump Through Hoops

This might sound counterintuitive but it can be an effective way to increase lead quality when your lead magnet requires a time investment on your part and therefore isn’t scalable.
For Example:
Let’s say that you offer a free 30-minute consultation as your lead magnet.
This can help you generate more leads because it allows potential customers to talk to you without having to pay for it.
But the problem with this setup is that it is likely to attract a bunch of time wasters who don’t know what they want, aren’t serious, or simply lack the budget to hire you.
You can combat this by asking people to fill out a short survey before scheduling a call with you.
This should help you weed out a lot of the aforementioned time wasters – you will end up getting fewer but higher-quality leads.
That being said, you need to be careful not to add too much friction to your lead generation process.
Otherwise, you might scare off not only the time wasters but also your dream customers.
Typically, the less established you are, the less friction you can afford, so this approach might backfire if you are just starting out.
