Why Having a Website is Not Enough

You probably already have a website.

But having a website is not enough if you are serious about growing your photography business. Why?

Because websites are dead. Sales funnels are the future.

Think about it:

What happens when a potential customer lands on your website?

They see a navigation bar with a bunch of links, so they start clicking around.

They check out this page. They check out that page. They look at your portfolio.

And then they leave. Possibly to never come back again.

So how does any of this help you to grow your business?

It doesn’t!

Why Having a Website Is Not Enough, maze of links graphic.
Your website is a confusing maze of links!

Meanwhile:

A sales funnel, by definition, helps you guide the potential customer towards the sale, one step at a time.

At each stage, you are presenting them with a single offer, a simple “Yes” or “No” decision.

There’s nothing confusing about it!

Your clickfunnel graphic.
A sales funnel is designed to guide the potential customer towards the sale one step at a time.

According to our data, on average, sales funnels generate 6x more sales than regular websites.

But don’t worry. We aren’t asking you to ditch your website altogether. Not yet at least.

Instead, set up an experiment where you test your website against your sales funnel, then keep the winner.

What is the Value Ladder Sales Funnel?

We believe that the best way to sell anything online is the Value Ladder sales funnel.

It was developed by our co-founder Russell Brunson who then used it to take ClickFunnels from zero to $10M+ in annual revenue in just one year (it’s at $100M+ now).

These sales funnel works for literally everything – consulting, software, info products….And photography services!

The Value Ladder has four stages:

  1. Bait – You offer the potential customer a lead magnet in exchange for their email address.
  2. Frontend – You offer the potential customer your least expensive and least valuable product or service.
  3. Middle – You offer the customer a more expensive and more valuable product or service.
  4. Backend – You offer the customer your most expensive and most valuable product or service.

Ideally, you also have some sort of continuity program, meaning, a subscription product that generates recurring revenue.

What Is the Value Ladder Sales Funnel?

The reason why the Value Ladder sales funnel works so well is that it allows you to:

  1. Start the relationship with that person by offering free value
  2. Nurture that relationship by continuing to provide free value via email
  3. Build trust by providing progressively more paid value at each stage of the funnel

Here’s how Russell explains it:

These sales funnel is becoming more and more popular, to the point where in the world of online marketing it’s pretty much a given nowadays.

But it’s probably safe to say that the vast majority of photographers aren’t studying online marketing in their free time.

And that means that building a Value Ladder sales funnel for your business can give you a competitive advantage.

How to Build Your Own Value Ladder Sales Funnel

You can build a basic Value Ladder sales funnel in five steps:

  1. Create a super valuable lead magnet
  2. Create a landing page for your lead magnet
  3. Create an irresistible frontend offer
  4. Set up an “indoctrination” email sequence
  5. Start driving traffic to your lead magnet landing page

Create a Super Valuable Lead Magnet

A lead magnet is a freebie that you offer to potential customers in exchange for their email addresses.

It can be anything that they can either download to their device or access online:

  • A report
  • An ebook
  • A webinar
  • A video course
  • An email course

What’s important is that:

  1. Your lead magnet provides a solution to a problem that the potential customer is struggling with
  2. That problem is either the same one or related to the one that your frontend offer addresses

So put yourself in the shoes of a person that is looking for a photography service like yours. What can you help them with?

  • Are you an event photographer? – You could create an ebook that offers advice on how to make the venue as instagrammable as possible.
  • Are you a wedding photographer? – You could create an ebook that gives ideas on the best backgrounds, best poses, best makeup, etc.
  • Are you an influencer photographer? – You could create an ebook that explains the basics of lighting, angles, etc.

By the way, it doesn’t have to be an ebook, but ebooks tend to work best for the “how-to” type of lead magnets.

Just keep in mind that potential customers are going to use your lead magnet to evaluate your expertise:

Impress them and they will be open to hiring you.

Disappoint them and they will assume that you are a hack.

Remember, you only get one chance to make a first impression, so make it count!

Create a Landing Page for Your Lead Magnet

Your lead magnet needs a landing page.

We recommend you start with a simple squeeze page that has these three key elements:

  • A headline that explains what your lead magnet is all about.
  • An opt-in form where the potential customer can type in their email address. It can be either displayed immediately or shown once they click the call-to-action button.
  • A call-to-action button that encourages the potential customer to get the lead magnet.

You might also want to experiment with various additional elements such as extra copy, social proof, relevant images, etc. Just make sure to A/B test everything!

Here’s an example of a simple yet highly effective squeeze page that we use for our “The Funnel Hacker’s Cookbook” lead magnet:

Create an Irresistible Frontend Offer

You also need a frontend offer.

It should be your least expensive and least valuable service.

But keep in mind that the service itself is just a service. You need to package it into an offer to make it appealing to the potential customer. So what else can you add to it in order to provide extra value?

For Example:

When Russell had a supplement company, he was selling supplements as an offer.

Meanwhile, other people were selling the exact same supplements, but they were selling them as products.

He was charging $67 a bottle, his competitors were charging $19.95 a bottle.

So what allowed Russell to charge 3x more?

He explains it in this video:

Set Up an ”Indoctrination” Email Sequence

We don’t advise hitting the potential customer with a sales pitch for your frontend offer the moment they subscribe to your email list.

Send them this email sequence instead:

  • Email #1: Who Are You? – Introduce yourself.
  • Email #2: Where Did You Come From? – Explain how you came to do what you do now. How did you get interested in photography? Why did you choose this particular niche? What there the pivotal moments in your journey?
  • Email #3: What Do You Do? – Explain what it is that you do in more detail. What is the niche that you specialize in? What services do you offer? What problems do you help solve? Don’t sell anything yet, just provide relevant information.
  • Email #4: How Did You Gain This Expertise? – What makes you qualified to do what you do? How did you learn your craft? Do you have any relevant credentials? Who were your mentors?
  • Email #5: Who Do You Do This For? – Explain who are your ideal customers + provide a case study on how you helped such a person to get the result that they wanted.
  • Email #6: How Can You Do It For Me? – Now it’s time to pitch your frontend offer. Alternatively, you can structure this email like a buffet, where you link to all the services that you provide and then the potential customer can choose whatever they like.

Emails #1 to #5 should end with a call to action where you ask the potential customer a question and then encourage them to hit the reply button and respond to your email.

Ideally, you should reply to all messages that you get in response, or at least as many as you possibly can.

Email #6 should end with a call to action to either click through to your frontend offer sales page or check out your “buffet” of offers.

We recommend using the Hook, Story, Offer framework for structuring these emails:

Start Driving Traffic to Your Lead Magnet Landing Page

Okay, so now that your sales funnel is all set up, how can you drive traffic to it?

We recommend you start with paid ads because paid traffic is the quickest way to see whether your lead magnet resonates with your target audience.

Create a Facebook ads campaign, set up a small daily budget, then launch the campaign and see what happens.

Once you figure out how to run Facebook ads profitably, you can expand into other paid advertising platforms such as Instagram.

All that being said, you don’t want to be completely reliant on paid ads forever, so we also advise you to build traffic-generating assets such as:

  • A social media following
  • A YouTube channel
  • A company blog

Be prepared to invest at least 12-18 months into these assets before they start generating a significant amount of traffic.

Case Study: This Photographer Made $125,000 Selling His Own Photographs

Craig Guignon got into photography when he was working in his godmother’s interior design business.

His clients would sometimes want to display photographs of local landmarks in their homes.

It quickly became clear that while it was easy to find photos of major cities like New York, sourcing ones of smaller cities and towns was a challenge.

So whenever Chris couldn’t find a suitable image, he would simply go out there and take photos himself.

Over time, he got better and better at it, until he reached the point where positive feedback from his clients made him realize that there was a niche there. So he decided to try selling his photos online.

Meanwhile, Chris’ godmother, who was in the last months of her life, gave him a copy of Russell’s “DotCom Secrets” book.

Here’s what she told him:

“Russell Brunson has figured it out. Follow him. It will give you the result that you are looking for.”

So Craig followed her advice, read the book, and started implementing its lessons using ClickFunnels software.

And that changed everything.

“I have discovered knowledge that has brought me from being a failing artist to having made $125,000 in the last 8 months purely from selling my own art”.
