Sales Funnel Management – How To Keep The Leads Flowing

Sales Funnel Management – How To Keep The Leads Flowing

Last updated on October 18th, 2025 at 05:18 am

Managing a sales funnel is all about mapping the customer’s journey, realizing the slightly obscure value of brand awareness, trying new things, identifying gaps, testing, and iterating.

Along the way, some things will work.

Some won’t.

But those failures don’t matter — so long as you keep experimenting and learning, the weight of your successes will far outweigh the weight of your failures.

Trust us.

We’ve tried a LOT of stuff here at ClickFunnels. And a decent portion of it has failed.

But because we kept digging for success, our few big wins outweigh our many small failures.

The same will be true for you IF you keep digging 🙂

Don’t be this guy…

Let’s talk about how to do that.

Understand Your Value Ladder

Russell Brunson introduced the idea of a value ladder in his bestselling book, DotCom Secrets (<– Get a FREE Copy There!).

It’s a template for outlining the path your customers are going to take from signing up for your first lead magnet(s)… to buying middle-tier products… to ascending to the most valuable and expensive offer you have available.

If you understand your value ladder, then you’ll have a much easier time managing your sales funnel — if you don’t, then you’ll struggle to guide customers toward the most natural next step.

Here’s the basic template.

Understand Your Value Ladder, the value ladder graphic.

On each step. you have a different product or service — starting with your bait and ending with your highest-ticket offer.

The arrows and dollar signs at the bottom indicate your continuity program. This is the subscription program that people pay you for annually or monthly. It helps you create recurring revenue for your business.

The GOAL is to take people from your bait to the big green dollar sign one step at a time.

Check out the video to learn more about how this works.

Okay.

But what does this actually LOOK LIKE in real life?

Let’s get UBER basic.

Imagine you move to a new city and you’re looking for a dentist. You find a dentist’s office that gives you your first teeth cleaning for free — WOOHOO, you think. Let’s do it.

You’ve been baited.

You go to get your teeth cleaned and the dentist asks if you drink coffee. Why yes you do! How did he know? Because your teeth are stained from years of that brown bean water.

He offers you teeth whitening. You say yes.

You’ve been upsold.

He later asks you if you used to wear braces. Right again! He mentions that teeth often slowly shift back from people who had braces when they were younger and that yours are starting to shift.

You ask if he can fix it.

He says he can build a retainer for you to keep them in place. You won’t even notice it.

Let’s do it, you say.

You’ve been upsold AGAIN.

Get the point?

You were baited with his free offer (ethically), and then upsold on things that you didn’t even know you needed!

So.

What does your value ladder look like?

Take some time to outline it — this will help you understand how you draw people into your ecosystem and, just as importantly, how you ascend them toward your highest-ticket offers.

If you don’t understand this, successfully managing your sales funnel will be nigh-on-impossible.

As a few more examples to ponder, here’s what our value ladder looked like for our DotCom Secrets launch…

And here’s a higher-level value ladder for our business as a whole…

Map Out the Entire Journey

Outlining your value ladder is an important step toward understanding and managing the entirety of your sales funnel.

But it’s only the first step.

There’s still a bit of work to do if we’re going to fully understand how you will drive people from becoming a lead and entering your ecosystem… to purchasing your highest-tier products.

If you have a LOT of lead magnets and product or service offerings — as we do at ClickFunnels — then mapping this out becomes more and more complicated.

If you just have a few offers, then this will be simple.

Either way, this is important. 🙂

Start by documenting…

  • All of Your Lead Magnets
  • Your Primary Value Ladder

This might take a bit of time to figure out. But it’s important to understand all of these pieces before you start mapping out the entire customer journey.

Once you have that information, grab a piece of paper and a pen.

You’re now going to outline the entire customer journey and brainstorm how to bring people from Point A to Point B and from Point B to Point C, so on and so forth.

This is going to be your “sales funnel map” — it’ll look something like this…

Map Out The Entire Journey diagram.

You might need to create multiple sales funnel maps for your various offers.

Start at the beginning.

What lead magnet is drawing these people in? What happens after they opt-in to your lead magnet? Do they receive an email sequence? Where offer does that email sequence point them toward? If they purchase that offer, what comes next?

Get the idea?

It’s sort of like you’re building the levels of a video game, trying to figure out how to draw the character toward the goal, one step at a time.

This process will likely involve email sequences, webinars, masterclasses, discounted offers, upsells, downsells, and lots more.

We recommend creating a sales funnel map for each of your paid offers.

Identify…

  • What lead magnet you’ll use to attract people to that offer.
  • How you’ll drive people from opting into the lead magnet to purchasing your offer.
  • Where you’ll send them after they’ve purchased this offer (i.e. the next step in your value ladder).

The more products or services you offer, the more time this is going to take.

But don’t hesitate to knock this process out one offer at a time. Create a sales funnel map for your main offer, test it out, and once you’ve nailed it, move on to your next primary offer.

Do this and you’ll have complete control over the success of your sales funnel.

Identify Traffic Sources

You might have a sales funnel.

But how are you filling that funnel?

Are you using advertisements? Organic social media posts? SEO traffic? Influencer marketing? Affiliate relationships? Something else?

To manage and make your sales funnel as successful as possible, you need to understand where your traffic is coming from as well as…

  • Which Sources Are The Most Lucrative
  • Which Sources Are The LEAST Lucrative

Double down on the most effective traffic-driving methods and dismiss the ones that are super ineffective.

You’ll also want to get in the habit of testing out new traffic sources.

There’s always room for improvement!

If you don’t where to start — or if you’re looking for new ideas — pick up Russell’s book, Traffic Secrets (it’s free if you use that link!).

Inside, he’ll show you how to use a traffic-driving process called The Dream 100.

This process is all about figuring out where your target market already congregates online and then infiltrating those communities with your lead magnet.

Identify Traffic Sources, dream 100 diagram.

The basic idea is this…

  1. Make a list of 100 different places where your target market congregates online. This includes influencers they follow, YouTube channels they subscribe to, newsletters they read, Facebook Groups they engage in, so on and so forth.
  2. Infiltrate your Dream 100 list with your lead magnet to turn those people into your very own list of subscribers. You can either buy your way in (pay someone to be included) or work your way in (build meaningful and authentic relationships with key decision-makers).

Check out the video below to learn how Russell used this process to build an authentic relationship with Tony Robbins…

And then do some brainstorming to…

  • Identify & Double Down On Your Best Current Traffic Sources
  • Eliminate Your Most Expensive Traffic Sources
  • Discover New Potential Traffic Sources

Monitor Results, Test, & Iterate

We left the best for last.

This is probably the most important tip in this article for anyone who’s managing sales funnels over the long term.

Play around. Try new stuff. Test. Iterate. And keep going!

It’s VERY unlikely that the first sales funnel or map you create is going to be the best possible version. To discover new levels of success, you’ll need to try out and test new stuff.

Heck, you might just be one tweak away… 😉

Let me give you an example.

My business partner and I recently started running ads to a new lead magnet to try and generate some leads for our business.

When we launched it, we spent $30 and literally got NO leads whatsoever.

So I showed the landing page to my wife and asked for advice.

She gave me some pointers: move this down, delete this, change this, etc.

All in all, the changes took me about five minutes. Here’s what the page looks like now (I forgot to screenshot the previous version)…

Monitor Results, Test, & Iterate, The Tonic example.

Now?

We’re getting leads at $3.50 a pop!

That’s a big improvement from getting NOTHING for $30.

And it only took five minutes.

Now…

The changes you need to make to get results might be bigger… or they might be smaller.

The point is that you need to change things up, try new things, make adjustments, and test to see what works and what doesn’t.

This is the single most important part of the sales management process.

So don’t skip it. 😉

Final Thoughts on Sales Funnel Management

Your first sales funnel might not be a huge success.

But if you manage your sales funnel well — understand your value ladder, map out the customer journey, get the right tools for the job, and iterate — then you’re virtually guaranteed to succeed eventually.

Keep going.

That’s the process that literally thousands of entrepreneurs, or as we like to call them, Funnel Hackers, have used to build massive businesses from the comfort of their sofas.

You can do it, too.
