3 Reasons That You Need To Have A Sales Funnel

3 Reasons That You Need To Have A Sales Funnel

Last updated on October 18th, 2025 at 08:14 am

Wondering whether you should build a sales funnel for your business?

Today we are going to discuss the three main reasons why you need one.

We will also share several ClickFunnels case studies to show you what’s possible.

Reason #1: Sales Funnels are the Most Effective Way to Sell Online

Imagine this:

You are going about your day, minding your own business.

And then some random person walks up to you and starts pitching you their product.

Needless to say, not only would you not buy that product but you would also be creeped out and avoid the seller in the future.

Yet online entrepreneurs often engage in the online equivalent of this behavior, then wonder why they are struggling to make sales.

They show someone who has never even heard of them an ad for their product, then hope that this person will click through to its sales page and buy it.

But why would you expect a complete stranger to hand over their hard-earned money to you??

When you consider your own online shopping patterns, it becomes apparent that impulse buys like that are an exception.

You probably take the time to familiarize yourself with the person or the company selling the product by following their social media, reading their blog, subscribing to their email newsletter, etc.

And you only purchase something from them once you trust them enough to feel confident that they will deliver the value that you expect.

Yet when you are the one doing the selling, it’s easy to forget all of that and go straight for the sale immediately.

A much better approach is to create a sales funnel that allows you to gradually build the trust required to convert people into paying customers.

That way, instead of hitting them with a sales pitch immediately, you offer them a freebie in exchange for their email address instead.

Then, once you have their contact details, you can introduce yourself and provide even more free value via email.

By the time you get to your sales pitch, they will already know who you are, what you do, and what you’re about.

In other words:

You won’t be a complete stranger to them anymore.

Which will make them much more likely to buy from you.

At first glance, this might seem complicated, especially compared to the usual “Yo, here’s my product, now buy it!” approach to selling online.

But selling this way is much more effective. So it’s worth investing in setting up a sales funnel for your business.

Reason #2: Traditional Websites are Dead

We have said it before and we will say it again:

Traditional websites are dead. Sales funnels are the future.

Think about it:

A traditional website is a confusing maze of links.

What happens when a potential customer lands on its homepage?

They see the navigation bar and start clicking around. They check this page, they check that page. Maybe they read a few articles on the blog.

And then they leave without buying anything. Possibly to never come back again.

How does any of that help you grow your business?

It doesn’t!

Sales Funnels Are the Most Effective Way To Sell Online

Meanwhile, by definition, a sales funnel is designed to guide the potential customer towards the sale, one step at a time.

At any given point, you are asking them to take the next step in your sales funnel, which is a simple yes or no decision.

This approach is much more likely to lead to a sale than letting people randomly click around your website and hoping that they will somehow end up buying your product.

Traditional Websites Are Dead

In fact, when we looked at our data, we discovered that, on average, sales funnels generate 6x more sales than traditional websites.

This means that, in all likelihood, not only is your website not helping you grow your business, it’s actually getting in the way!

Our best advice is to ditch your website altogether and replace it with a sales funnel. But we understand that this might seem a bit drastic.

So why don’t you do an experiment:

Build a sales funnel for your business, then test it against your current website. Drive the same amount of traffic to each and see which one converts better. Then keep the winner.

We already know what the results are going to be! 😉

Reason #3: Sales Funnels are the Best Way to Build a Sustainable Business

When you send traffic directly to your sales page, most of it doesn’t convert into sales.

Meanwhile, when you send traffic to your sales funnel instead, most of it doesn’t convert into sales either…

But at least you get the contact details of some of those potential customers.

That way, even if they choose not to buy your product at that time, you can continue nurturing those relationships via email marketing.

This might not seem like a big deal when you are just starting out and have 3 email subscribers.

But think about how this plays out over an extended period of time – a year, five years, ten years.

If you continue growing your email list, you will eventually reach 100,000+ email subscribers. Can you imagine that?

At that point, if you want to introduce a new product, you will be able to launch it directly to your list.

You will also be able to sell your existing products on autopilot via automated email sequences.

And you will even have some sales coming in without you having to do anything at all.

Sometimes, people are not ready to buy when you first pitch your product to them but then they come back months or even years later to purchase it.

Simply staying in touch via email can help you be the first person that comes to their minds when they start looking for a solution to a problem that your product addresses.

And that’s why online marketers say that the money is in the list. So stop chasing one-off sales and start collecting email addresses. The future you will thank you.

Why the Value Ladder Sales Funnel is the Most Effective Sales Funnel of Them All

Okay, now you understand why you need a sales funnel, but what should it look like?

We believe that the most effective sales funnel out there is the Value Ladder sales funnel.

It was created by our co-founder Russell Brunson who then used it to take ClickFunnels from zero to $10M+ in annual revenue in just one year (it’s at $100M+ now!).

This sales funnel has four stages:

  • Bait – You offer the potential customer your lead magnet in exchange for their email address.
  • Frontend – You offer the potential customer your least expensive and least valuable product or service.
  • Middle – You offer the customer a more expensive and more valuable product or service.
  • Backend – You offer the customer your most expensive and most valuable product or service.

Ideally, you also offer a continuity program of some sort, meaning, a subscription product that generates recurring revenue.

We also recommend adding downsells, upsells, and cross sells to these core offers in order to maximize your revenue.

Why the Value Ladder Sales Funnel Is the Most Effective Sales Funnel of Them All

The reason why this sales funnel works so well is that it allows you to:

  1. Start the relationship with that person by offering free value.
  2. Nurture that relationship by continuing to provide free value via email.
  3. Build trust by providing progressively more paid value at each stage.

Here’s how Russell explains it:
