Want to make more sales?
You could do that by generating more traffic.
However, we recommend starting with conversion rate optimization instead, as that can help you make the most of the traffic that you are already getting.
Here’s how you can increase your sales conversions…
- #1: Conduct Extensive Customer Research
- #2: Replace Your Website With a Sales Funnel
- #3: Build a Value Ladder Sales Funnel
- #4: Have a Super Valuable Lead Magnet
- #5: Create an Irresistible Frontend Offer
- #6: Use the Hook, Story, Offer Framework
- #7: Emphasize the Benefits in Your Sales Copy
- #8: Pique People’s Curiosity
- #9: Optimize for Lead Quality
- #10: A/B Test Everything!
#1: Conduct Extensive Customer Research
You can’t be effective at selling if you don’t understand your target audience on a deep level.
That’s why you should learn as much as you can about both the demographic and psychographic traits of your ideal customers:
- Demographic traits are objective facts about them such as ethnicity, gender, age, education, occupation, income level, location, etc.
- Psychographic traits are their values, beliefs, fears, desires, dreams, etc.
You can do that by figuring out where your ideal customers hang out online and then observing the conversations happening there.
This could mean:
- Reading blogs
- Listening to podcasts
- Watching YouTube videos
- Subscribing to subreddits
- Joining online forums
- Following influencers
- Keeping an eye on relevant hashtags
…etc.
You should also try to talk to your ideal customers one-on-one, whether in person or online.
Finally, if you can afford that, consider using social listening, text analysis, and audience analysis tools in your customer research.
Ideally, you want to get to the point where you understand your ideal customers better than they understand themselves. What really drives them?
You might also want to create a customer persona that represents your target audience.
It should be a fictional character that is an aggregate of the most common demographic and psychographic traits that your ideal customers share.
The purpose of this customer persona is to help you conceptualize your target audience so that you could better empathize with it.
The idea might seem goofy at first but customer personas can be super helpful when you are writing copy.
After all, we humans have evolved to live in small tribes, so we aren’t that great at empathizing with large groups of people.
That’s why it’s much easier to write compelling copy if you do it with a specific person in mind, even if that person is fictional.

#2: Replace Your Website With a Sales Funnel
We said it before, and we’ll say it again:
Websites are dead. Sales funnels are the future.
This might sound like a controversial statement, but it’s just common sense when you think about it.
What happens when a potential customer lands on your website?
They see the navigation bar and start clicking around. They check out this page. They check out that page. Maybe they read a few blog posts.
And then they leave, Possibly to never come back again.
How does any of that help you make sales?
It doesn’t!

Meanwhile, a sales funnel is designed to guide the potential customer towards the sale, one step at a time.
Instead of hitting them with a bunch of random links, you present them with a single “Yes or No” decision.
And if they say “Yes” and progress to the next stage in your sales funnel, you present them with another “Yes or No” decision.
And so on, and so forth, until they reach the end of your funnel.
This is a much more effective approach to selling.

In fact, according to our data, on average, sales funnels generate 6x more sales than traditional websites.
Consequently, replacing your website with a sales funnel is likely the best thing that you can do to increase your sales conversions.
However, we understand that ditching your website altogether might seem a bit drastic, so we suggest starting with a simple experiment:
Create a sales funnel, test it against your website, and keep the winner.
We already know what the results are going to be 😉
#3: Build a Value Ladder Sales Funnel
We believe that the most effective way to sell anything online is the Value Ladder sales funnel.
It was created by our co-founder Russell Brunson who then used it to take ClickFunnels from zero to $10M+ in annual revenue in just one year (it’s at $100M+ now!).
This sales funnel has four stages:
- Bait – You offer the potential customer your lead magnet in exchange for their email address.
- Frontend – You offer the potential customer your least expensive and least valuable product or service.
- Middle – You offer the customer a more expensive and valuable product or service.
- Backend – You offer the customer your most expensive and most valuable product or service.
Ideally, you also offer a continuity program of some sort, meaning, a subscription product that generates recurring revenue.
We also recommend adding downsells, upsells, and cross sells to these core offers in order to maximize your revenue.

The reason why this sales funnel works so well is that it allows you to:
- Start the relationship with that person by offering free value
- Nurture that relationship by continuing to provide free value via email
- Build trust by providing progressively more paid value at each stage
Here’s how Russell explains it:
#4: Have a Super Valuable Lead Magnet
A lead magnet is a freebie that you offer to potential customers in exchange for their email addresses.
It can be anything that they can either download to their device or access online:
- A report
- An eBook
- An email course
- A video course
- A webinar
…etc.
What’s important is that:
- Your lead magnet offers a solution to a problem that your ideal customers are struggling with.
- That problem is either the same one or related to the one that your frontend product addresses.
Ideally, you want your lead magnet to serve as a free sample of the value that your frontend product offers so that the former would help you sell the latter.
The easiest way to achieve that is to offer a part of your frontend product as your lead magnet.
Say, if your frontend product is a book, then you use its first chapter as your lead magnet.
Alternatively, you can provide a solution to a problem with your lead magnet, then have a frontend offer that helps people implement that solution.
Say, after the ClickFunnels launch, Russell did a ton of webinars where he taught entrepreneurs about sales funnels.
He would end those webinars by pitching our software which is designed to help people build profitable sales funnels.
Whatever you decide, keep in mind that your lead magnet is the foundation of your entire sales funnel, so you need to go all out with it.
Remember, your ideal customers will use your lead magnet to evaluate whether or not they should invest in your paid products.
Impress them and they will want to see what else you have to offer.
Disappoint them and you won’t get a second chance.
So make sure that your lead magnet is super valuable and exceeds all expectations.

#5: Create an Irresistible Frontend Offer
It’s important to understand that the purpose of your frontend offer isn’t to make you loads of money, it’s to convert leads into paying customers.
That’s why it’s best to create a product that is designed specifically for that.
We also recommend pricing it at $7.
That way, the price:
- Isn’t low enough to make the potential customer skeptical of the product’s value.
- Isn’t high enough to make the potential customer stop and think twice before buying it.
You also want to remove all financial risk from the purchase decision.
You can do that by offering a 30, 60, or even 90-day no-questions-asked money-back guarantee.
According to the commitment and consistency principle, if you can get the customer to commit to something, you can then use that small initial commitment to escalate to a larger commitment. This is known as the foot-in-the-door sales technique.
Your frontend product is what allows you to get your foot in the door. And once someone buys something from you, they become more likely to buy more stuff from you in the future.
#6: Use the Hook, Story, Offer Framework
We recommend using the Hook, Story, Offer framework in your copy:
- Hook – Grab the potential customer’s attention.
- Story – Tell them an engaging story that resonates with them on a deep level.
- Offer – Transition from that story into your sales pitch and end it with a clear call to action.
Here at ClickFunnels, we use it for pretty much everything, from our ads to our landing pages to our emails to our sales pages. Why?
Because it works!
#7: Emphasize the Benefits in Your Sales Copy
The distinction between features and benefits is one of the most important copywriting principles:
- A feature is a quality or a function of a product (e.g. “These shoes are waterproof”).
- A benefit is the value that the customer will derive from that product (e.g. “These shoes will keep your feet dry”).
Arguably, the most common copywriting mistake is leading with features, which is what feels intuitive for most people.
However, your ideal customers don’t care about your product, so there’s no point in going on and on about how great it is.
What they care about is what your product can do for them. How will it make their lives better?
That’s why you should always emphasize benefits in your copy, whether you are writing an ad, an email, or a sales page.
It’s a good copywriting practice to ask yourself whether you are talking about:
a) Yourself or your product.
b) Your ideal customers.
Remember, as the old copywriter joke goes, everyone’s favorite radio station is WII FM (“What’s in It for Me?”).
So focus on your ideal customer.
How can you help them?
#8: Pique People’s Curiosity
Another copywriting mistake that we see all the time is giving everything away in your copy.
If you tell people exactly what they are going to get, that diminishes their interest in whatever it is that you are offering. Why?
Because they assume that they already know what you are going to say. So what’s the point in spending their time, energy, or money on it?
What you want to do instead is give your ideal customers just enough information to pique their curiosity so that they would be eager to take the next step and learn more.
Here’s how Russell explains it:
#9: Optimize for Lead Quality
Struggling with conversions?
It might be that the problem isn’t the sales funnel itself but the traffic that you are driving to it.
All traffic can be divided into these two categories:
- High-quality traffic (your ideal customers)
- Low-quality traffic (everyone else)
Your traffic will always be a mix between the two, but you should aim to increase the proportion of the former as much as possible. But how can you do that?
The Pareto principle, also known as the 80/20 rule, states that:
For many outcomes, roughly 80% of the consequences come from 20% of the causes.
In the business context, this means that it’s likely that around 80% of your revenue comes from around 20% of your customers.
Consequently, you can drastically improve traffic and therefore lead quality by:
- Identifying the minority of the customers that generate the majority of the revenue.
- Figuring out what traits these people tend to have in common.
- Creating a customer persona based on those common traits.
- Using that customer persona in your ad targeting in order to attract more people like that.
- Excluding people who don’t match that customer persona from your ad targeting.
This should lead to an increase in sales, revenue, and profit.
#10: A/B Test Everything!
Ultimately, the conversion rate optimization tips we shared in this article are just best practices, not universal laws.
You can’t know for sure whether they will work for your business until you implement them. And that’s where A/B testing comes in.
A/B testing, also known as split testing, is a method that marketers use to figure out what works and what doesn’t:
- You create two variants of the same page: variant A and variant B.
There should be only one difference between them – the element that you are testing. - You split the traffic equally between the two variants.
- You keep the variant that converts better.
It’s advisable to read up on A/B testing statistics so that you would understand the key concepts such as statistical significance.
However, that isn’t absolutely necessary, since any software with a decent A/B testing functionality will handle the math for you.
What’s important is that you get into the habit of practicing intellectual humility when it comes to conversion rate optimization.
It’s easy to get so excited about an idea that you start feeling that you “just know” that it’s going to work…
But the truth is that you can’t possibly know that until you have tested it.
So stay humble and A/B test everything.
