A landing page is the first impression a lot of people will get of your brand.

It’s the first point where visitors are going to subconsciously ask themselves, “Is there something here that I want… or not?”

And so sales funnel landing pages are an important asset.

One that you should spend some time thinking about how to optimize.

In this guide, we’ll explain what a sales funnel landing page is, how you can use ClickFunnels to create high-converting landing pages, and then give you some practical tips.

What is a Sales Funnel Landing Page?

Quite simply, a sales funnel landing page is the first page of your sales funnel — the page where people land.

In the case of a Tripwire Funnel, for instance, the two-step sales page would be considered the landing page because it comes first.

What is a Sales Funnel Landing Page, diagram.

It’s as simple as that.

Where do people go after they click on your advertisement?

That’s your landing page.

And it’s arguably the most important part of your entire sales funnel.

Because if you don’t nail your landing page, then people won’t continue through the rest of your sales funnel.

That’s what we’re going to show you how to do.

Here are some examples of our own landing pages we’ve created here at ClickFunnels.

And for our sales funnel building software…

That should give you a general idea of what these pages look like.

They try to quickly capture the visitor’s attention, build rapport, and encourage action.

Here’s how you can use ClickFunnels to create awesome sales funnel landing pages… step by step.

Go into your account and click on “Build a Funnel”.

Using ClickFunnels to Create Sales Funnel Landing Pages, build a funnel example.

Then select the goal of your sales funnel — do you want to collect emails, sell products, or host a webinar?

For this example, I’m going to select “Sell Your Product”.

You’ll then be prompted to choose a funnel type based on your specific goal.

I’m going to select “Sales Funnel”.

You’ll then give your sales funnel a name…

… and you can start building by clicking “Build Funnel”.

Now with the sales funnel I selected, my landing page is going to be called a “Sales Page” — this is the first page that I want people to land on. So I’m going to delete the Squeeze Page step.

Now, you can choose a sales page template and start editing with our powerful drag-and-drop editor.

5 Tips for Optimizing Your Sales Funnel Landing Pages

Now you know how to technically build a sales funnel landing page inside of ClickFunnels.

But there’s a big difference between building a landing page… and building a landing page that converts.

Here, we’re going to share five tips for turning any ol’ landing page into a high-converting landing page.

1. Nail the Headline & Subheading

It might sound crazy… but 80% of your brainpower should go toward nailing your headline and subheading.

This is where you – in as few words as possible – tell people what you’re offering, why it’s awesome, how it’s going to help them, and why they can only get it from you.

When I spoke with Dean Edelson recently, one of the primary copywriters for us here at ClickFunnels, he pointed out that the most important thing is to explain “the new opportunity that’s the key to their desire and it’s only available through your unique mechanism.”

Make sense?

See if you can answer these questions as it relates to your offer…

  • What’s the new opportunity you’re offering?
  • How is that the key to your target market’s desires?
  • What’s your unique mechanism that makes it possible?

Answer those questions and you can craft an awesome headline.

Let me show you an example of how this works.

Here’s the headline copy I wrote for my offer before having Dean take a look at it…

  • Freelance Writers!
  • Don’t Know Where Your Next Client is Coming From?
  • Strop Stressing & Generate an Endless Supply of High-Paying Clients On-Demand

Not bad, right?

But Dean told me to add more specificity, bigger promises, and a clear mechanism to the headline.

So now we’ve got this instead…

  • Attention Freelance Copywriters!
  • Uncover an Endless Supply of Fast-Growing Companies That Are HUNGRY For Freelance Copywriters Using My Unique Client Conveyor Belt System

Way better, right?

It’s something they haven’t seen before and so it builds more curiosity — which is the single most important emotion to create with your heading and subheading.

If people are curious, they’ll keep reading.

Check out the first tip in this video to see how big of an impact curiosity can have on your conversion rate…

Amazing, right?

Spend as much time on your headline and subheadline as you need — it’s been said that 80% of people will only read the headline before deciding whether to click your CTA or not.

So this step is important.

Give it the attention it deserves.

2. Target Your Market

“The riches are in the niches”, as many entrepreneurs have said.

And it’s critical that your target market knows they’re in the right place the second that they land on your page.

The simplest way to do this is with a call-out at the top of the page.

Something like this, for instance…

Target Your Market, example.

And the more niche this call-out is, the better. You want your target market to know that you’re speaking directly to them.

The last thing you want is for them to be confused.

So keep this simple and tell them they’re in the right place immediately.

If you don’t know who your target market is, then check out this video and spend a bit of time creating your customer avatar — no offer or landing page will succeed without a clear target market…

3. Emotion, Logic, Fear

You know you need to spend a lot of time thinking about your headline — you also know that you need to call out your target market specifically.

But… then what?

Landing pages have a lot more stuff on them than just headlines and call-outs.

There are benefits, features, stories, CTAs, and lots more.

How do you structure all of those elements to be as persuasive as possible?

Well, at ClickFunnels, we’ve found that about 50% of people purchase because of emotions… and the other 50% purchase because of either logic or fear.

Check out the third tip in this video (starts at 4:35)…

That’s how we recommend structuring your landing page.

Start with emotion, introduce logic, and end with fear.

Emotion, Logic, Fear outline.

Okay…

But how does this work in real life?

Let’s look at an example from our One Funnel Away landing page. Notice how the top of the page is almost entirely designed to trigger people’s emotions…

Emotion, Logic, Fear. One funnel away landing page example.

We talk about how “the life you want, the marriage you want, the family you want… is going to be fueled by the business you build.”

Then we tell them that “freedom is just one funnel away.”

We’re trying to get them to dream about what this challenge might be able to do for them.

We even dive into an empathetic story of where they might be at in their life and what they’re struggling with.

We provide hope by telling them that their dreams are “one funnel away.”

That’s the emotional part of this landing page.

Next, we move to logic. How? Check it out…

Emotion, Logic, Fear. Logic example.

That’s hard to argue with. That’s an immense amount of value for just a $100 investment.

For people who weren’t entirely convinced by the emotion of our landing page, this will be a strong logical argument to push them over the edge.

Then it’s just a matter of fear.

How do you create fear?

By making your offer scarce — offer it only for a certain period of time or only offer it to a certain amount of people.

People are procrastinators and urgency pushes them toward action.

Here’s how we create a sense of urgency on this landing page…

Emotion, Logic, Fear. Urgency example.

We tell them that time is of the essence because the next challenge is starting soon and we don’t know when the next challenge will be.

For people who weren’t entirely convinced by the emotion and logic on this page… they’ll be convinced by the urgency.

Using all three of those elements is a recipe for high-converting success 🙂

4. Use Heatmaps & A/B Test

Creating a landing page that converts like clockwork is no easy task.

Even with all of the tips we’ve provided here, every landing page is different.

What works for you might not work for another entrepreneur in the same industry — it’s all a matter of target market, offer, and nuance.

So…

How do you know what works?

Well, information is power. And I highly recommend…

  1. Putting heatmaps on your landing pages
  2. A/B testing the copy and design on your landing pages

Start with heatmaps — you can use a tool like Hotjar or CrazyEgg.

Heatmaps, scroll maps, and click maps will give you a better idea of how visitors are interacting with your landing pages.

Which, in turn, will give you a better idea of what to test.

You can easily run A/B tests inside of your ClickFunnels account.

This is a fundamental part of the process of optimizing landing pages.

Embrace it.
