7 Awesome Copywriting Tips For Photographers

Last updated on January 8th, 2026 at 01:21 pm

So you created a website for your photography business.

But merely having an online presence is not enough – you also need to know how to sell your services.

Ultimately, it boils down to copywriting, which is selling via the written word.

Ads, emails, sales pages… That’s all copywriting.

Today we are going to share seven awesome copywriting tips that photographers can use to grow their businesses!

#1: Clearly Define Your Dream Customers

When you are just starting out as a photographer, you might need to accept any and all work that comes your way.

Beginner photographers often do everything from taking photos at weddings to helping people get good photos for their dating profiles to doing commercial real estate photoshoots.

This approach is understandable from the perspective of generating income but it can be disastrous if you want to build a photography business.

It’s okay to take on random gigs here and there to pay the bills but when it comes to the actual business that you promote online you need to pick a niche. Why?

Because no one who can afford to hire a specialist will want to work with a generalist who is a Jack or Jill of all trades, master of none.

So if you want to make a name for yourself and command premium prices, you need to specialize in something.

Once you decide on your niche, you should clearly define your dream customers.

Think about their demographic traits such as:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Ethnicity
  • Education
  • Occupation
  • Religion
  • Location

…etc.

It might be advisable to niche down even further – say, instead of wedding photography in general, you could specialize in wedding photography for a specific demographic.

Of course, you need to make sure that the niche is large enough for you to build a sustainable business.

But the more specific you are in your targeting, the easier it will be to write copy that resonates with your dream customers.

#2: Conduct Extensive Customer Research

The most effective copywriters in the world are the ones that understand their target audience the best.

That’s why customer research is the foundation of all good copywriting.

The easiest way to conduct customer research is to figure out where your dream customers hang out online and observe the conversations happening there.

That could mean:

  • Subscribing to subreddits
  • Joining Facebook groups
  • Registering to online forums
  • Paying for memberships in online communities
  • Keeping an eye on relevant hashtags on Twitter

…etc.

However, if you have opportunities to talk to your dream customers face-to-face, you should take advantage of that as well.

You might be surprised how much you can learn by casually chatting with people who fit your dream customer profile. Just don’t try to sell them your services because that will put them on guard!

The aim of customer research is to understand the psychology of your dream customers.

Focus on psychographic traits such as:

  • Values
  • Religious beliefs
  • Political beliefs
  • Social influences
  • Lifestyle aspirations

You also want to uncover their hopes, fears, and dreams – what’s really driving your dream customers?

Finally, pay attention to the words, metaphors, and imagery that your dream customers use to express themselves.

All this knowledge will prove to be invaluable once you start writing copy.

#3: Understand the Difference Between Features and Benefits

One of the most important copywriting principles that you need to understand is the difference between features and benefits:

  • Features describe what’s included in the offer
  • Benefits describe how the offer will make the potential customer’s life better

People buy based on benefits.

That’s why you should always emphasize them in your copy.

Lead with the #1 benefit which is what people really hope to achieve by hiring you as a photographer.

Say, if you specialize in dating profile photoshoots, what people really want when they hire you is to increase their chances of finding love.

Obviously, you can’t just say “my photos will help you find love”, as that isn’t something that you can guarantee.

However, you can say that good profile photos can increase their chances of finding love, which is true.

#4: Preemptively Address Objections

Another important copywriting principle is preemptively addressing objections. What concerns might prevent the potential customer from hiring you?

There are some universal objections such as concerns over price or being worried about buyer’s remorse that likely applies to whatever it is that you are offering.

And then there are also objections specific to your offer.

Say, if you are offering dating profile photoshoots, then potential customers might be worried that they don’t know how to pose for photos.

You can address this concern by mentioning that you can coach them on how to pose so that they would look confident and present themselves in the best way possible.

Think about potential objections and make sure to preemptively address the most important ones in your copy.

If you have done enough customer research, this shouldn’t be much of a challenge given that your dream customers are probably discussing these concerns online.

Of course, as you get more experience dealing with your dream customers directly and hearing their objections first-hand, you should make adjustments accordingly.

#5: Provide Social Proof

Social proof is a psychological principle that says that when people are unsure of what to do, they look at what others do in order to determine the best course of action.

In the business context, this means that whenever the potential customer is unsure of whether to trust you, they will look for indications that other people trust you.

You can use this to your advantage by providing that social proof yourself.

There are two types of social proof:

  • Direct social proof that relates to the offer in question. Typically this means customer testimonials.
  • Indirect social proof that relates to you as a person. This can mean mentioning relevant credentials, accomplishments, awards, etc. as well as displaying “As Seen On” media badges.

You want to use both types of social proof whenever possible – in general, the more social proof you can provide, the better!

#6: End Your Copy With a Clear Call to Action

Each piece of copy that you write needs to have a single conversion goal.

This applies to everything from ads to emails to sales pages. What do you want the potential customer to do next?

You should end your copy with a call to action that encourages the potential customer to take that next step.

Note that while there should be only one conversion goal, you can have several calls to action as long as they all serve the same conversion goal.

Say, you can have several “Hire Me” buttons on your sales page, as they all serve the same conversion goal of persuading the potential customer to hire you.

#7: Remove Financial Risk Whenever Possible

The main obstacle to making any purchase is the financial risk involved.

This is especially true when you are buying something or hiring someone for the first time. What if you end up with buyer’s remorse? No one wants to feel foolish.

You can address this issue by removing financial risk whenever possible. Can you offer a 30-day money-back guarantee?

This may not always be a viable option, especially when it comes to large gigs such as multi-day weddings, but we want to encourage you to experiment with guarantees like that.

This is more important for photographers who are just starting out – once you establish yourself, potential customers will be more inclined to trust you due to your reputation, so the financial risk will be less of a concern to them.
